Ex-official owes funds

Columbus

The former director of the Columbiana County Drug Task Force, who pleaded guilty to theft in office in 2014, owes an additional $4,603, according to an audit released Tuesday by State Auditor Dave Yost.

On June 6, 2012, the Columbiana County Auditor’s Office issued $4,603 to the task force’s confidential informant fund, but the funds were unaccounted for in its bank accounts and fund ledgers. A $4,603 finding for recovery was issued against former Director Daniel Downard.

A special audit of the task force, released Jan. 8, 2015, found Downard gave his wife a new task-force cellphone and accrued $1,333 in monthly access charges and fees.

The special audit issued $1,568 in findings for recovery against Downard, which he repaid during the audit period.

Downard pleaded guilty in November 2014 to felony counts of theft in office, unauthorized use of property and attempted tampering with evidence. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison Jan. 12, 2015, and released March 10 of that year.

Road rage reported

YOUNGSTOWN

A man driving through Youngstown told police he was the victim of an apparent road-rage incident that included gunfire on the city’s East Side.

According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, the man showed up at police headquarters about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and told an officer he was driving south on the Himrod Avenue Expressway when a Toyota Corolla came up behind his car at a high rate of speed.

According to the driver, the Corolla then pulled in front of his car and cut him off. When the cars reached the split between the Interstate 680 north and southbound exits, the driver says he could hear several gunshots and spotted the other driver holding a silver handgun out of his car window as he passed him.

The bullet had passed through the brake light, the rear seat and the back of the driver’s seat. The suspect is described as a white male in his late 20s or early 30s, with medium-length sandy brown hair.
