Sandusky’s named removed

STATE COLLEGE, PA.

Between John Rosenberg and Joe Sarra on page 241 of Penn State’s 2016 football yearbook, a name is missing.

At least in one way, Penn State has erased Jerry Sandusky from its history.

The school removed the former longtime assistant coach’s name from the “All-Time Nittany Lion Assistant Coaches” list in its yearbooks, also known as media guides, from the past few seasons in the wake of his child sex abuse scandal that came to light in fall 2011.

“The administration made the decision in June 2012 to remove him from parts of the media guide, effective with the media guide for the 2012 season,” read a statement per an athletics department spokesman.

The spokesman did not know “who specifically was involved in any discussions about removing his name,” if it was the university or athletics administration, nor any further details about the reasoning behind that choice.

Utah RB Williams retires

SALT LAKE CITY

Utah starting running back Joe Williams has retired from football after a slow start to the 2016 season.

Coach Kyle Whittingham said the senior has some physical issues that forced him to leave the game. Williams was expected to replace current Denver Broncos running back Devontae Booker, but struggled and was benched during the last game after losing a fumble. Ball security had been an issue for Williams since 2015.

“His body is just worn out,” Whittingham told reporters Tuesday. “It has nothing to do with playing time or any bad feelings, he’s leaving on good terms. I think you noticed in some games that he’s just not the same guy. He has some things that are really bothering him physically so he’s going to retire.”

Williams rushed for 75 yards on 22 carries in two games this season and is on track to graduate in December. Freshman Zack Moss has been promoted to starter after rushing for 58 yards on 12 carries in his debut last week.

Whittingham also announced that defensive end Kylie Fitts will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury. Fitts was in his second season as a starter and led the Utes with seven sacks in 2015.

UNC player faces charges

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C.

A North Carolina football player has turned himself in on an arrest warrant for sexual battery and assault on a female student in February.

In a news release, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said Allen Anthony Artis, 21, turned himself in Wednesday morning to face two misdemeanor charges. He was released by the magistrate on a $5,000 unsecured bond.

The arrest warrant stated Artis had sex with the woman against her will when he “should have reasonably known that the other person was mentally incapacitated and physically helpless.”

Artis is scheduled to make his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon.

The woman, Delaney Robinson, said Tuesday she had become intoxicated after being out with friends and was unable to consent. The Associated Press typically doesn’t identify alleged victims of sexual assault, but Robinson held a news conference, saying she had filed for the misdemeanor charges after police and prosecutors indicated there wasn’t enough evidence to pursue felony charges.

Her attorney also criticized the way campus police handled a rape kit and the questioning of Artis, a reserve junior linebacker now indefinitely suspended from the team.

Florida WR may not play

GAINESVILLE, FLA.

Florida coach Jim McElwain says leading receiver Antonio Callaway is “highly questionable to doubtful” to play against North Texas.

Callaway injured a quadriceps in a 45-7 victory against Kentucky. Callaway leads the 23rd-ranked Florida (2-0) with 13 catches for 201 yards and two touchdowns, including a career-long 78-yarder against the Wildcats. Florida also will be without guard Tyler Jordan, who will have eye surgery to repair damage stemming from a broken orbital bone. McElwain says Jordon will miss a couple of games, so he won’t play at No. 15 Tennessee next week. The sophomore had started Florida’s last five games at right guard.
