The Youngstown State women’s golf team set a school record for a 54-hole tournament placing second at the NKU Fall Classic which concluded on Tuesday. YSU carded a three-round total of 913 at the event.

YSU improved all three rounds during the event. On Monday, the Penguins opened with a 310 before firing a second round 305. YSU ended the tournament with a 298 on Tuesday, the second-lowest final round score. Marshall won the event with an 898.

The previous low 54-hole score in school history was 926 set at the 2015 Horizon League Golf Championships.

YSU basketball wine tasting coming up

The Youngstown State men’s basketball program will host its Third Annual Wine Taste at L’uva Bella Winery and Bistroon Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. Tickets to the event cost $35 and includes five wine tastes of your choice with cheese and crackers and a silent auction. Also, guests will be provided a small food menu and a percentage of all bottle sales will benefit the men’s basketball program.

YSU volleyball wins fourth straight

The Youngstown State volleyball team won its fourth straight match on Tuesday night, beating Robert Morris in four competitive sets at the Sewall Center. The set scores were 31-29, 24-26, 25-22, 25-23.

The Penguins had a balanced offensive attack with five players recording at least nine kills. Middle blockers Sarah Varcolla (14) and Lori Vanbeek (13) combined for 27 kills, Sam Brown posted 11, Morgan Tippie registered a career-best 10, and Valor Haggerty notched nine. Brown added 15 digs, and Vanbeek contributed on nine of YSU’s 12 blocks. Val Jeffery had 15 digs to go along with her 48 assists, and Dana Borsz led the squad with 17 digs.

GYTOA announces sportsmanship award

The Greater Youngstown Track Officials Association has announced a new sportsmanship award.

This award will be based not on how many races are won, how far someone has thrown or how many points are scored. However, it will be awarded based on how athletes win or lose, how they interact with competitors and officials, and how they lead in practice and at athletic contests.

Mahoning and Columbiana County Coaches may nominate a track or cross country athlete. Applications will be available at County Cross Country and Track Championship Meets as well as on GYTOA.com or by e-mailing GYTOA@yahoo.com. The first sportsmanship award will be given in a June 2017 awards dinner and will honor an athlete from the 2016-17 seasons.

Tressel to speak at Trumbull HOF banquet

Youngstown State President Jim Tressel will be the guest speaker at the Trumbull County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet on Oct. 30 at Divieste Banquet Center, 754 North River Road.

Inductees are Jan Burns (Howland track), Carl Capellas (Howland soccer), Tim Davis (Warren football), Matt Emch (Niles football), George Fetchko III (Howland track and wrestling), Gerald Lenarcic (Newton Falls football and baseball), Pat Merrick (Warren football), Bill Miller (Warren football and track), Ray Muche (Niles football), Vince Peterson (Warren football), Frank Supancic (Warren swimming) Jimmy Sanders (Warren boxing) and Col. Harris E. Rogner (Brookfield football and basketball).

A buffet dinner will be served at 2 p.m. following a social hour at 1:15 p.m. There will be a cash bar.
