Pennsylvania officer struck by car, fired shots in return

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Police say a Pennsylvania officer who told the driver of a speeding car to slow down was struck by the vehicle after it backed up and appeared to purposely run into him.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports the incident occurred just before 9 a.m. Wednesday in Vandergrift, a borough about 30 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Police say the officer yelled at a motorist he believed was traveling too fast in a parking lot. Police say the officer fired shots at the vehicle, striking the windshield at least once, before the vehicle struck him. A garbage truck employee nearby was also reportedly hit by the vehicle.

State police have the driver in custody. He wasn’t hit by gunfire.

The officer’s injuries aren’t believed to be life-threatening.
