State approves funding for OSP in Youngstown
COLUMBUS — The state Controlling Board OK’d nearly $95,000 this week to help cover the costs of producing meals for inmates at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown on the East Side.
About $64,000 of the total will pay for food-warming carts used to deliver three meals daily to cells – inmates at the facility eat in their individual quarters, not common dining areas, according to documents.
“The carts, trays and lids are needed to ensure that appropriate food temperatures are maintained,” according to documents.
Another $18,600-plus will be used to buy a tilting skillet, a large frying pan used to “grill, fry, simmer and braise large quantities of food.”
The tilt skillet at the prison off state Route 616 is more than 10 years old and no longer functioning properly.
The equipment will be purchased from the Wasserstrom Co. in Columbus.
