Austintown police arrest man after assault on his wife

AUSTINTOWN — Officers arrested a 68-year-old man after he purportedly tried to strangle his 85-year-old wife with a cellphone cord in their home.

According to a police report, Joseph Gionfriddo, of Edgehill Avenue, was accused by his wife of having an affair Sunday afternoon.

After an argument broke out, he took his cellphone cord, placed it around her neck and told he was going to kill her, reports said.

Gionfriddo is charged with domestic violence and was taken to the Mahoning County jail.
