NATIONAL LEAGUE
Nationals 8, Mets 1
WASHINGTON
Starting pitcher Mat Latos hit a solo home run and Antony Rendon added a three-run shot as Washington beat New York. Latos had a solid first start with the Nationals, but left the game with one out in the fifth inning when he appeared to injure his right leg. The 28-year-old signed a minor league deal with Washington in June after the Chicago White Sox released him. In his first big league start since June 7, Latos allowed three hits and one run with three walks and four strikeouts as the Nationals earned their fourth straight win. Reynaldo Lopez (3-3) was among three relievers to combine for 42/3 scoreless innings.
Reds 3, Brewers 0
CINCINNATI
Scott Schebler hit a two-run single in Cincinnati’s three-run first inning and four pitchers teamed up on the Reds’ eighth shutout of the season in a victory over Milwaukee. Keyvius Sampson started and Blake Wood (6-3), Michael Lorenzen and Raisel Iglesias followed as the Reds posted their seventh shutout since the All-Star break. They went into the game tied with the Cubs, Angels and Marlins for the most second-half shutouts in the majors. Iglesias pitched the final two innings for his third save in four opportunities as the Reds extended their winning streak to four games.
Braves 12, Marlins 7
ATLANTA
Nick Markakis doubled to drive in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, Tyler Flowers had four RBIs and Atlanta rallied to beat Miami. The teams combined for 34 hits. Atlanta, which ranks 28th in runs scored, finished in double digits for just the third time this year and the first time at Turner Field. Miami erased a seven-run deficit in the sixth on Christian Yelich’s RBI single and Giancarlo Stanton’s pinch-hit sacrifice fly made it 7-all. After Markakis gave Atlanta the lead back, Anthony Recker’s pinch-hit RBI single put the Braves up 9-7 in the seventh. Flowers added a two-run single in the three-run eighth.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Tigers 4, Twins 2
DETROIT
Miguel Cabrera and Ian Kinsler homered, and Detroit scored two runs in the seventh inning on close plays at the plate, rallying for a 4-2 victory over Minnesota. Andrew Romine slid in safely with the tying run on a double by Jose Iglesias, and Iglesias scored on Kinsler’s sacrifice fly to put the Tigers ahead 3-2. Cabrera’s homer in the eighth gave Detroit an insurance run, and the Tigers pulled within a game of Baltimore for the American League’s second wild card. Shane Greene (4-4) got the win in relief, and Bruce Rondon worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth.
Blue Jays 3, Twins 2
TORONTO
Tampa Bay and Toronto cleared the benches and bullpens after the Blue Jays wrapped up a win, ending the skirmish without throwing any punches. Steven Souza Jr. hit a flyball for the final out, and appeared to be upset at the way closer Roberto Osuna celebrated the victory. Souza spoke with Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin before leaving the field. Ezequiel Carrera connected for a tiebreaking, pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning. Jose Bautista added a two-run homer as the Blue Jays improved to 3-7 in September.
Red Sox 12, Orioles 2
BOSTON
David Ortiz hit his 536th home run to tie Mickey Mantle for 17th on baseball’s career list, and David Price allowed just a pair of solo homers to lead the Red Sox to a 12-2 victory over Baltimore and protect Boston’s lead in the AL East. Chris Young homered, doubled twice and singled, and Hanley Ramirez also homered for the Red Sox, who maintained a two-game edge over Toronto. The Red Sox won for the fifth time in six games, scoring in each of the first seven innings.
Athletics 16, Royals 3
KANSAS CITY, MO.
Khris Davis and Marcus Semien hit three-run homers, the Athletics matched a season high with 17 hits while drawing 10 walks, and Oakland trounced Kansas City. Daniel Coulombe (3-1) earned the win in relief of Ross Detwiler, though it was the Oakland offense that led the way. The A’s scored their most runs this season for their largest margin of victory. Royals starter Dillon Gee (6-8) was battered for five runs on five hits and four walks in 31/3 innings.
Rangers 4, Astros 3, 12 innings
HOUSTON
Rougned Odor had three hits and three RBIs, including a solo homer in the 12th inning that lifted Texas to a victory over Houston. The Rangers, who have the best record in the American League at 86-59, improved to 14-3 against AL West rival Houston this season. Odor launched his 31st homer over the short fence in right field off James Hoyt (1-1) to put Texas on top with no outs in the 12th. Odor, who finished a triple shy of the cycle, has six home runs, six doubles and 19 RBIs in 16 games against Houston this season.
INTERLEAGUE
Dodgers 8, Yankees 2
NEW YORK
Aaron Judge dropped Chase Utley’s fly ball to the right-field warning track and catcher Gary Sanchez threw wildly to second base, leading to four unearned runs that helped NL West-leading Los Angeles beat AL wild-card chasing New York. Jose De Leon (2-0) won in his second big league start, and fellow rookie Corey Seager singled twice and drove in a run on the former field of his childhood hero, Derek Jeter. Yasiel Puig pinch hit in the eighth and drove an opposite-field home run over the right-field short porch.
