The Valley Christian football team crushed Bridgeport 41-2 on Saturday night at Poland Stadium. The game was marred by a two-and-half-hour weather delay.

Eagles quarterback Dominique Jennings was 10-13 for 170 passing yards with two passing touchdowns and rushed for another score.

Western Reserve blanks Catholic Central

STEUBENVILLE

Western Reserve quarterback Wyatt Larimer ran, threw and caught passes in Western Reserve’s 20-0 win against Steubenville Catholic Central on Saturday.

The senior tallied 58 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground, passed for 44 yards and caught two passes for 26 yards. Jack Cappabianca scored on a short TD run and Western Reserve (1-2) picked up its first win of the year. Hayden Daley rushed for a team-high 56 yards for Catholic Central (0-3) .

YSU’s Strollo to speak to Curbstone Coaches

BEAVER TOWNSHIP

Youngstown State athletic director Ron Strollo will be the featured speaker Monday at the weekly luncheon of The Curbstone Coaches at the Avion Banquet Center on Western Reserve Road in Beaver Township. The event begins at noon and is open to the public.

Sharon Speedway rained out Saturday

Hartford

Sharon Speedway was forced to cancel the non-sanctioned Sprint Car event for the second straight time on Saturday. The “410” Sprints were scheduled back on August 13, but impending storms throughout the evening have forced the cancellation of events. Saturday was also to include the final night of points for the Big-Block Modifieds, Modifieds, Econo Mods, and Mini Stocks, to be cancelled. It marked the seventh rain out of the 2016 season.

With the rain out, Sharon Speedway will crown Rex King, Jr.-Hovis Auto & Truck Supply DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds, Joe Gabrielson-Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds, Brandon Ritchey-Lyden/Red Line Oil RUSH Sportsman Modifieds, Paul Davis-Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars, Steve Haefke-HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods, and Steve Walker II-Deforest Used Parts Mini Stocks 2016 champions.

Sharon will wrap up the 87th anniversary season next Friday and Saturday with the annual “Apple Festival Nationals”.

YSU volleyball picks up two wins

AKRON

The Youngstown State volleyball team earned a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon to finish an undefeated weekend and win the Akron Invitational.

The Penguins set a school record with 17 aces to start Saturday off with a four-set victory over Canisius. They then swept the host Zips behind an .405 attack percentage in the championship match.

Senior Lori Vanbeek was named the tournament MVP, and she was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Val Jeffery and Sarah Varcolla. Vanbeek averaged four kills per set while hitting .500 for the weekend, and Jeffery led an offense that hit .311 over the three matches. Varcolla was impressive in her own right with an average of 3.09 kills and a .397 attack percentage.

The Penguins beat Canisius 25-14, 21-25, 25-15, 25-22, and the scores against Akron were 25-17, 25-18 and 25-15. It was YSU’s first three-set sweep of the Zips in school history.

Gronk to miss season opener

FOXBOROUGH, Mass.

Tight end Rob Gronkowski will miss the New England Patriots’ opener against the Arizona Cardinals tonight because of a hamstring injury.

The team confirmed Friday night that Gronkowski had been downgraded from questionable to out for the game. Also missing the game will be offensive linemen Jonathan Cooper and Nate Solder — and suspended quarterback Tom Brady.
