Connectors program

YOUNGSTOWN

The 2016-17 Youngstown Community Connectors program will kick off Sept. 22 with an event featuring special guest speaker Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, former boxing champion.

At the event, which takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. at Choffin Career & Technical Center, 200 E. Wood St., attendees will learn more about the program that is aimed at getting students in 11th and 12th grades workforce-ready by matching them to job and mentorship opportunities.

Youngstown City Schools’ students, parents/guardians and educators; community leaders; and businesses that are interested in offering internship, externship and mentoring opportunities are encouraged to attend the event.

Literacy grants

YOUNGSTOWN

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation announced the award of local literacy grants to area organizations to support youth literacy.

Local grant recipients include: Canfield Local Schools, $2,000; Kyrsten Elizabeth Studer Memorial Foundation, $4,000; St. Nicholas School, $3,959.64; Liberty Local Schools, $3,780; The Salvation Army, $3,138; and the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, $3,000.

These grants are part of more than $4.5 million in youth literacy grants awarded to about 1,000 organizations across the 43 states that Dollar General operates.

2016 Safety Expo set

WARREN

The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Youngstown Service Office will present the 2016 Safety Expo on Oct. 16 at the Trumbull Career and Technical Center, 528 Educational Highway NW.

The event presents valuable and effective information regarding safety and health programs. This year’s expo offers 40 quality educational sessions – the most offered since the event began nine years ago.

Educational sessions have a limited amount of seats, so early registration is suggested. Registration and pre-pay is due by Oct. 7. The cost is $30 to attend an all-day expo, which includes lunch.

Casino revenue falls in August in Pa.

HARRISBURG, PA.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board recently posted the monthly report for total gross revenue and tax revenue generated from the play of slot machines at casinos during August.

Combined gross revenue from slot machines at the 12 casinos fell 4.5 percent in August of this year to $193,949,367 compared with the $203,026,163 of gross revenue in August 2015. Tax revenue in August of this year was $103,498,951.
