Neighbors | Submitted.Toby Smith (34) raced 30 yards for the touchdown against Alliance on Aug. 31. The Canfield Village Middle School seventh-grade team defeated its opponents with a score of 36-0.
Canfield Village Middle School seventh-graders opened their 2016 campaign with a 36-0 victory over Alliance on a rain-soaked Bob Dove Field on Aug. 31.
Canfield opened the scoring on their first possession when quarterback Paolo Papalia hit Toby Smith in the right flat with a 30-yard scoring strike. The drive covered 65 yards in five plays and was keyed by a 23-yard strike from Papalia to Conner Julian. The two hooked up again for the 2-point conversion and a 8-0 lead.
The Cardinals struck again in the waning moments of the first half when Papalia scampered 2-yards around right end to paydirt. Papalia then found tight end Jake Grdic in the end zone for the 2-point conversion to make it 16-0 at the half.
Canfield stretched their advantage to 22-0 in the third quarter when Michael Crawford darted 15 yards for the touchdown. The home team struck again moments later when Drew Carrocce rumbled in from 13 yards out and Oliver Kovass tacked on the conversion to make it 30-0. Toby Charnesky raced 15 yards on a fourth and one to round out the scoring. Papalia finished the day 6 of 12 through the air for 81 yards and a touchdown; he also tossed two 2-point conversions. Crawford led all rushers with 47 yards on five totes, while the fullback tandem of Smith and Carrocce combined for 58 yards on seven carries.
Canfield’s defense was stellar throughout, led by Ryan Hively, AJ Wise, Anthony Canacci, Grdic and Ian Hull.
Coach Donadee cited offensive linemen Chris DeDonato, Ryan Bennet and Andrew Seaman for their play.
