NEIGHBORHOOD NATURALIST: SHOREBIRDS

When: Saturday, 9 to 11 a.m.

What: Every fall thousands of shorebirds migrate through Ohio. The mud flats of Berlin Reservoir are a great place to observe the birds, and several species may be seen, including sandpipers, plovers, ducks, gulls and herons.

Where: Public boat landing on Berlin Reservoir, located on Price Street, just west of state Route 225.

Cost: Free

Details: We may be walking in muddy areas, so wear appropriate shoes. We will have some binoculars available but bring your own if you have them. Register for directions to the site.

HERBAL CIDERS

When: Saturday, 10 to 11:30 a.m.

What: Learn how to make and craft your own nutritious vinegar-based tonics, called herbal ciders, with confidence and creativity. Led by Mandy Smith.

SOIL & FERTILITY FOR GARDENS AND LANDSCAPES

When: Tuesday, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

What: Come learn about growing great plants through improving the soil and maintaining fertility. We’ll cover practices that safeguard water quality and the environment.

Where: OSU Extension Office, Canfield.

Cost: Free

Details: Door prizes include 25 free soil tests and much more. Registration is through the Mahoning County Farm Bureau Office.

FULL MOON NIGHT HIKE

When: Sept. 16, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

What: Walk the trails to the east end of the nature preserve to see the rising moon.

Where: Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center Visitors Center, 16146 Daniel St. NE, Minerva.

Cost: Free

Details: Bring a flashlight, insect repellent and water. Registration required. Best for ages 10 to adult.
