Western Reserve’s Hughes breaks record
GREENSBORO, N.C.
Western Reserve graduate and Youngstown State redshirt-freshman Aleah Hughes set a school record for digs in a game with 30. The mark came during the Penguins’ four-set victory against UNC Greensboro late Saturday night.
Hughes had nine digs in the second set and seven in the other three. She broke Laurie Shives’ mark of 29 in 2009.
Steelers place Bud Dupree on IR
PITTSBURGH
Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Bud Dupree will miss at least the first eight weeks of the season to deal with a lingering groin injury that sidelined him during training camp.
Dupree recorded four sacks during his rookie season in 2015 and shed 20 pounds in the offseason in hopes of adding quickness of the edge on the pass rush. Instead the Steelers will likely go with veteran Arthur Moats in the 2016 opener at Washington on Sept. 12.
Pittsburgh can designate Dupree as eligible to return at some point, but he is required to sit out at least eight weeks.
The Steelers signed veteran Steven Johnson to take Dupree’s roster spot. Johnson was among the final cuts when Pittsburgh pared down to 53 players on Saturday.
Thieves raid Foltz brother’s home, car
LINCOLN, Neb.
While Nebraska honored punter Sam Foltz who died in a car crash this summer, someone broke into his brother’s home and car.
Greeley County Sheriff David Weeks says the burglary happened sometime after the Foltz family left home around noon to attend Saturday’s game in Lincoln and before they returned around 3 a.m. Sunday.
The thieves took items worth roughly $1,400, including a television and tools, from Jordan Foltz’s home and vehicle in the Greeley, Nebraska, area.
Sam Foltz, who would have been a senior at Nebraska this fall, died in a car crash in Wisconsin in July along with former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler.
Foltz’s parents presented a scholarship in his name and two of his nephews helped lead the team out before Saturday’s game against Fresno State.
U.S. soccer star kneels during national anthem
CHICAGO
U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe knelt during the national anthem Sunday night before the Seattle Reign’s 2-2 tie with the Chicago Red Stars in the National Women’s Soccer League.
“It’s the least I can do. Keep the conversation going,” Rapinoe tweeted about her actions in protest of racial injustice and minority oppression.
Rapinoe’s protest follows similar high-profile actions by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The football player’s refusal to stand for the anthem first came to public notice when he remained seated on the bench before a preseason game against Green Bay. On Thursday night in San Diego, Kaepernick and safety Eric Reid kneeled during the anthem before a game against the Chargers.
The 31-year-old Rapinoe helped the U.S. win the World Cup last year and played in the Rio Olympics.
Quintana extends Vuelta lead
ARAMON FORMIGAL, Spain
A surprise attack by Alberto Contador helped Nairo Quintana boost his lead over Chris Froome to more than three minutes after Sunday’s 15th stage of the Spanish Vuelta.
An audacious move by Contador’s Tinkoff team caught the peloton off guard with an attack at the start of the short 118.5-kilometer (74-mile) ride in the Pyrenees.
Quintana quickly joined Contador’s small breakaway that surprised Froome and isolated him from his Sky teammates who were even further behind.
Quintana increased his 54-second advantage entering the day to 3 minutes, 37 seconds with six stages left.
