Scrappers lose in W. Va on walkoff

GRANVILLE, W. VA.

West Virginia Black Bears’ second baseman Kevin Mahala hit a walkoff RBI-single off the Mahoning Valley Scrappers reliever Alsis Herrera in the ninth inning to hand the Scrappers a 4-3 defeat.

The Scrappers went into a 3-0 hole in the second inning after starter Juan Hillman gave up a two-run single to the Black Bears’ Sandy Santos and a third run cme in after third baseman Gavin Collins’ throwing error.

Scrappers catcher Jack Goihl led the comeback by playing part in all three of his team’s runs.

He hit a solo home run in the top of the third and scored outfielder Silento Sayles with a double in the top of the fifth. Goihl tied the gave on Miguel Eladio’s sac-fly.

West Virginia’s Evan Piechota picked up the win by allowing two hits in two innings of work.

Herrera gave up the game winning run on four hits in 2.1 innings, striking out two.

The Scrappers’ season finale is today at 1:05 p.m.
