Corrections

Liberty football player Dra Rushton scored a 10-yard touchdown in Friday’s 28-21 win over Lakeview. Rushton was incorrectly credited with a 90-yard touchdown. Also, Boardman kicker Tommy Fryda kicked all four extra points in the Spartans’ win over Cardinal Mooney on Friday night. An incorrect kicker was listed in a summary in Saturday’s edition.

Sadler captures Xfinity race

DARLINGTON, S.C.

Elliott Sadler won for the first time at Darlington Raceway, holding off defending champion Denny Hamlin in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race Saturday.

Sadler was second on the track “Too Tough To Tame” in this event in 2013 and 2014, trailing Sprint Cup star Kyle Busch both times. In this one, Busch’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Hamlin, made a late charge and nosed in front two laps from the end.

But Sadler held strong through the final turns and crossed in front to earn the checkered flag at Darlington for the first time in 32 career starts — 18 in Sprint Cup, 13 in Xfinity and one in the truck series.

Hamlin ended second after leading 47 of 147 laps. Daniel Suarez was third and Kyle Larson, last week’s Sprint Cup winner at Michigan, was fourth.

Serena cruises; Shvedova is next

NEW YORK

So about that inflamed right shoulder that was supposed to hinder Serena Williams at the U.S. Open as she seeks a record 23rd major title: It sure seems to be just fine.

“Definitely feels solid,” Williams said.

Not sure? There’s plenty of evidence. No need to take her word — or her coach’s — for it.

Look at the way Williams beat 47th-ranked Johanna Larsson 6-1, 6-1 on Saturday to reach the fourth round at Flushing Meadows and collect the 307th Grand Slam match victory of her career, surpassing Martina Navratilova for most by a woman in the Open era and equaling Roger Federer for most by anyone since 1968.

That sounds like bad news for upcoming opponents, starting with 52nd-ranked Yaroslava Shvedova, who advanced to the round of 16 in New York for the first time by beating Zhang Shuai 6-2, 7-5.

Monday’s other fourth-round women’s matchups will be Williams’ older sister Venus vs. No. 10 Karolina Pliskova, No. 5 Simona Halep vs. No. 11 Carla Suarez Navarro, and No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska vs. Ana Konjuh.

NASCAR to celebrate Throwback Night

DARLINGTON, S.C.

The Tide Ride, the Busch Beer car and the bright red Coca-Cola machine. All locked in fans minds and NASCAR history — and all back on display at Darlington Raceway’s latest throwback weekend.

Sprint Cup drivers and teams have gone all out to dress up for the Southern 500 tonight, pulling out beloved paint schemes to honor stock car racing’s colorful, vibrant past. Carl Edwards will sport a tribute to retiring — and fiery — Tony Stewart and his Home Depot car from his rookie season in 1999.
