Walmart, Sam’s Club campaign to benefit Akron Children’s

BOARDMAN

Walmart and Sam’s Club are having their annual Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals register campaign to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.

Now through Oct. 9, Walmart and Sam’s Club customers at 25 locations across Northeast Ohio can make a $1, $2 or $5 donation at the register when completing a purchase. For a $5 donation, customers will receive a reusable, insulated, zippered tote featuring the Akron Children’s and CMN logos, while supplies last.

Last year, Walmart raised $260,000 for Akron Children’s through its CMN Hospitals register campaign. Since 1987, Walmart has raised $870 million nationally for CMN Hospitals.

FDA bans antiseptic chemicals from soaps

WASHINGTON

The federal government Friday banned more than a dozen chemicals long-used in antibacterial soaps, saying manufacturers failed to show they are safe and kill germs.

“We have no scientific evidence that they are any better than plain soap and water,” said Dr. Janet Woodcock, the Food and Drug Administration’s drug center director, in a statement.

Friday’s decision primarily targets two once-ubiquitous ingredients – triclosan and triclocarban – that some limited research in animals suggests can interfere with hormone levels and spur drug-resistant bacteria.

Man charged with threatening new Sandy Hook School

NEWTOWN, Conn.

A Connecticut man is accused of phoning in a threat to the new Sandy Hook Elementary School, which replaced the building that was demolished after 20 children and six educators were shot to death there in 2012.

Newtown police arrested 28-year-old Pierre Beauvil, of Stamford, on Friday on threatening, harassment and breach of peace charges.

Police say someone called the school’s main office a couple of weeks ago and asked when the first day of school was. After he was told it was Aug. 29, he made a threat against the school for that day.

Newtown police say they and other area police departments are investigating whether Beauvil threatened other schools.

Transgender restroom trial delayed in NC

RALEIGH, N.C.

The trial over a North Carolina law restricting restroom access for transgender people is being pushed back by several months, attorneys challenging the law said Friday.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Joi Elizabeth Peake granted a request from the state’s Republican leaders to delay the North Carolina trial while the U.S. Supreme Court considers whether to hear a Virginia case on transgender restroom access, according to a brief entry in the federal court docket.
