POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Poland and Boardman townships:

POLAND

Aug. 23

Recovered property: A stolen 1995 Ford Sedan was found during a traffic accident near Arrel and Kansas roads.

Menacing: A 17-year-old boy and a woman reported having been threatened while at a Center Road store.

Aug. 24

Criminal damaging: A padlock was damaged at a structure in the 3000 block of Dobbins Road.

BOARDMAN

Aug. 26

Fraud: A Meadowbrook Avenue man noticed a $100 unauthorized charge to his bank account that apparently originated from a company in Cambodia.

Criminal damaging: A vehicle in the 800 block of Boardman-Poland Road was found with several scratches to its passenger side. Damage was estimated at $500.

Theft: Police at the Trumbull County Jail took custody of 39-year-old Benjamin D. Hoffman of South Kimberly Avenue, Youngstown, who was accused of stealing a $25 men’s T-shirt earlier this month from Kohl’s, 383 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: Two people reportedly stole a $1,000 sound-bar device from Target, 417 Boardman-Poland Road.

Menacing: A Lowellville woman told police a man in a car threatened to beat her up when she picked up wooden pallets, with permission, from behind two businesses in the 1100 block of Doral Drive.

Vandalism: Someone climbed onto a roof and damaged an aluminum guard at the Boardman Plaza on Boardman-Canfield Road.

Theft: Erica L. Mace of Leighton Avenue, Boardman, was arrested during a traffic stop near Lake Park Road when, police discovered, the 35-year-old woman was wanted on a Youngstown warrant.

Drugs: Authorities near Midlothian Boulevard pulled over then charged 34-year-old Earl J. McCready of Champlain Avenue, Youngstown, with two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and one each of drug abuse as well as possession of drug-abuse instruments and dangerous drugs, all misdemeanors. A bag containing seven prescription pills, a pouch filled with hypodermic needles, two packages of suspected drug paraphernalia, a spoon with burn marks common in drug use, a suspected crack-cocaine pipe and a folded piece of paper with suspected drug residue were found, a report stated.

Aug. 27

Arrest: A traffic stop near Leighton Avenue resulted in the arrest of 25-year-old Christopher T. Meier, who was wanted on a Youngstown Municipal Court bench warrant charging failure to appear in court. Meier, of Southern Boulevard, Boardman, also received minor-misdemeanor citations charging him with having suspected marijuana and a suspected marijuana pipe.

Arson: Authorities assisted the Boardman Fire Department with a structure fire in the 100 block of Homestead Drive that apparently was intentionally set and originated from a wooden bookshelf under the basement stairs. Police and firefighters found no evidence that an accelerant had been used, however, a police report said.

Arrest: A traffic stop near Youngstown-Poland Road resulted in the arrest of Elizabeth M. Demarco of Forest Glen Drive Southwest, Warren, on a charge of operating a vehicle impaired. The 40-year-old Demarco’s blood-alcohol content was 0.157, nearly double Ohio’s 0.08 legal intoxication limit, a report showed.

Theft: Lauren M. Horvatovich, 26, of Indian Run Road, Canfield, was charged in the theft of $146 worth of clothing from Burlington Coat Factory, 529 Boardman-Canfield Road.

Arrest: After responding to a suspicious person near West Boulevard, officers apprehended and charged a Youngstown boy, 17, with obstructing official business and being an unruly juvenile after saying the teen had run from them.

Menacing: A Maple Avenue man discovered that while watching an online video, a man in Florida had made a threat on the video to beat up the accuser.

Theft: Someone stole $2,100 worth of assorted tools, including a nail gun, while in the 100 block of Prestwick Drive.

Theft: Anthony M. Hlebovy, 29, of Princess Street, Campbell, was charged with stealing a $100 set of Sony PlayStation 4 headphones from Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive.

Arrest: After pulling him over near Interstate 680, police charged 25-year-old Jonathan J. Wetzel of Larkridge Avenue, Boardman, with operating a vehicle impaired. Wetzel had a 0.183 blood-alcohol content, a report showed.

Theft: Authorities took custody of Mitzi S. Stoddard, 26, of Lincoln Avenue, and 34-year-old James L. Cunningham Jr. of East Eighth Street. The two East Liverpool residents were accused of stealing a home-security system and miscellaneous tools April 8 from Walmart.

Theft: Matthew S. McDade, 19, of Garfield Avenue, East Palestine, faced a charge after being accused of stealing four bottles of nasal spray from Marc’s, 7121 Tiffany Blvd.

Aug. 28

Aggravated menacing: A Market Street man told officers he had received threats via text messages to harm and kill him.

Theft: Police charged 23-year-old Zachary M. Datchuk with theft and possession of criminal tools after alleging Datchuk, of Woodland Chase Boulevard, Niles, had stolen four T-shirts from Champs Sports in Southern Park Mall. Also, aluminum foil had been wrapped around the items’ security tags, a report said.

Drugs: Officers responded to a report of a woman passed out in a vehicle on Southern Boulevard before charging 50-year-old Melanie J. Beacham of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Youngstown, with drug abuse. Found was a bag of suspected marijuana, along with tablets of Clonazepam, a controlled substance commonly used to treat seizures and panic disorders, a report showed.

Domestic violence: Jason E. Smith, 45, who listed addresses on Mill Road and Georgia Avenue in Berlin Center, was charged with the crime after his former girlfriend alleged Smith had made a series of death threats against her while she was at a friend’s Boardman residence.

Theft: Police took 43-year-old Lisa A. Altman into custody at her Jaguar Drive home on a theft warrant. The Boardman woman was accused of stealing $240 worth of DVDs on July 26 from Giant Eagle, 476 Boardman-Canfield Road.

Burglary: To an apartment in the 1900 block of Wolosyn Circle after someone had kicked in the front door. A $3,000 gold bracelet was among the pieces of jewelry taken, for a $9,000 loss.

Theft/criminal damaging: A Shields Road woman alleged her boyfriend had stolen a 48-inch flat-screen TV and other property and damaged numerous items in her apartment when the accuser announced she wished to end their relationship. The damage and theft came to $1,985.

Criminal damaging: A woman noticed an archery arrow had been shot into and left a puncture in a corner of her roof at her Cove Place residence.

Theft: Columbiana police handed to township authorities 34-year-old James L. Cunningham Jr. of East Eighth Street, East Liverpool. He was accused of taking about $800 worth of electronics items in late July from Walmart.

Aug. 29

Theft: A worker for a Market Street car dealership alleged a customer had stolen several tools, for an $848 loss.

Theft: A man in his mid-30s reportedly stole a $498 flat-screen TV from Walmart.

Vandalism/menacing: A woman told police someone followed her, then tossed an object at her vehicle as she drove near U.S. Route 224 and Southern Boulevard, though her car sustained no damage.

Identity fraud: A Salinas Trail woman reported that after having visited a tax-service business, she learned someone attempted to use her personal information to buy a home and a car.

Identity theft: A Pleasant Gap, Pa., man discovered his bank card had been used without consent to make a $125 purchase at a Doral Drive big-box store.

Menacing: A West Boulevard woman told officers a man rang her doorbell and, after initially ignoring it, reported he gave her unwanted attention by leaving a note, a bouquet of flowers and a phone number.

Theft: A woman discovered a $5,000 gold wedding band missing from a bedroom at her Shelby Road residence.

Burglary: Took place at a home in the 1700 block of Lynn Mar Avenue, though police found no signs of forced entry. The homeowner discovered over-the-counter medications missing, and that a bank employee left a phone message indicating a woman had evidently tried to cash one of his checks.

Vandalism: A vegetable stand in the 6300 block of Market Street was vandalized. The owner also saw that someone had urinated on and damaged some of the produce.

Domestic violence: Vernon L. Brown, 39, of Market Street, Boardman, faced two misdemeanor domestic-violence charges as well as one misdemeanor count each of aggravated menacing and assault after police had responded to a fight in the 100 block of Stadium Drive. A woman alleged Brown had tossed her to the ground, choked the accuser and threatened several times to shoot her; a man who tried to intervene alleged Brown threw him against a wall and struck his face.

Theft: A Lowellville man reported a $100 bill he had accidentally left at a self-checkout lane at a Doral Drive big-box store was gone when he returned.
