Western Reserve Contra Dance Sept. 10

The monthly Western Reserve Contra Dance will take place from 7-9:30 p.m. on Sept. 10 at the Dublin Grange Hall, located at 6571 Fairground Boulevard in Canfield. The “contra” is a New England social dance, with ever-changing partners and live traditional music by the band “One String Short.” A caller will teach each dance and guide the dancers. Dress is casual, and beginners of all ages are welcome. Partners are not required and new friends will be made. Admission is $8 and light refreshments will be served. Canfield Lions fish fry

The Canfield Lions will be hosting a Fish Fry on Sept. 9 at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield. Dine from 4:30-7:30 p.m. with a menu of haddock (baked or fried), a choice of macaroni and cheese, haluski, pierogi or French fries, green beans or cole slaw, a roll, dessert and a beverage. The cost will be $11.

Free frappe day

Dairy Queen locations are celebrating the unofficial end of summer with a free frappe giveaway from 2-5 p.m. on Sept. 6. The Austintown and Cornersburg locations will be participating. The Cornersburg location is 3555 S. Meridian Road. The Austintown location is at 146 N. Canfield Niles Road.

Sing at the Canfield Fair

As has occurred for many years, on the Sunday morning of the Canfield Fair (Sept. 4 this year), singers are invited to assemble at the stage near the grandstand/concourse to sing during the 9:30 a.m. Canfield Fair Ecumenical worship service. A choir rehearsal will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the presentation of two anthems during the church service. Participants will be reimbursed their admission fee for that day. Musical direction and additional special music will be presented by Tom and Kelly Scurich, accompanied by Sherry Goddard.

Greenbriar benefit concert

The Commons at Greenbriar will be hosting a concert to benefit Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana to help send Deanna to the Florida Theme Parks. This concert will feature Party of Two, an acoustic music duo, and will take place on Sept. 15 from 6:30-8 p.m. The cost will be $5 and includes refreshments. There will also be a basket raffle and a 50/50 auction. This will take place at the Commons at Greenbriar, located at 8060 South Ave. in Boardman. Newcomers Club meeting

The September meeting of the Newcomers Club of Canfield will be a “Spa Night” at Betty’s home on Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m. The following services will be offered and will be 30 minutes in length. Pedicures are $20, manicures are $10, massages are $25 and gel or shellac nails are $25. Service personnel will be working for tips only. The service fees will be donated to the club. Membership dues are due by the September meeting. You can pay $28 now so that you are included in the membership directory which will be distributed in October. Business card sized ads in the directory are $10. Upcoming events include the Witches Wine Fest on Oct. 11 and a Guided Meditation at Salt Sensations on Nov. 8. Whether you are new to the area, new to the neighborhood or just looking to make some new connections, the Newcomers Club of Canfield is a friendly group of women of all ages and interests. They welcome you to join them for an upcoming event to find out more about our group. Come as the group’s guest, and should you decide to join our club, the annual dues are $28.

Greenbriar cat adoption

Greenbriar Healthcare Center will be hosting an event on Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. to help the Animal Charity Humane Society find loving homes for the adoptable cats and kittens featured. This will take place at 8064 South Ave. in Boardman.

GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Square Dancing

On Sept. 13 the Friendly Squares of Niles are hosting an introduction to Modern Square Dancing. This will be at the Niles Senior Center (Scope). Learn to square dance with Friendly Squares

Learn to square dance at the weekly square dance lessons being offered beginning Sept. 13 from 7-9 p.m. at the Niles Senior SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. The lessons are being offered by the Niles Friendly Squares. All age groups are welcome. There is a nominal fee of $6 per lesson. Bonding with babies and books - ASL-American Sign Language

Come to the Canfield library on Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. and learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones. Babies, ages 6-23 months must be accompanied with an adult.

Playtime at your library

Prepare for kindergarten through play at the Canfield library on Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. This event is for those ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

PLYMC libraries are Pok Stops

Pok mon trainers up to grade 12 are invited to stop in and get a free gift at any local library from Sept. 6-17 during regular library hours. Tell the library staff that you’re there to hunt for Pok mon and you will receive a prize. Check out library materials that day or get a library card and you can receive an additional prize (both prizes are limited to one of each per participant). Your library has always been the place to get your favorite books, DVDs and music CDs and now you can get your Pok mon gear as well. The Pok mon Library project is for children through grade 12.

The Canfield library will host an event for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months every Thursday in September at 10 a.m. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Preschoolers and toddlers can celebrate all things dinosaurs during Canfield library’s Dino Week. Preschoolers are welcome for stories, a craft and come to meet a special Jurassic guest on Sept. 20 at 10 and 11 a.m.

Lego Mindstorms Robots at the library

Discover how to build, program and test Lego Mindstorms Robots every Thursday in September at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library. Children will meet each Thursday for four weeks to work through the stages of building and programming the robots. This event is for those in grades 3-7. This is a series of programs and registration for all four programs must be made prior to Sept. 7. Space is limited.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Canfield library on Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. and Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, age 6 and up.

Take a guess

Guess the number of items in the jar during regular September hours at the Canfield library. The closest guess wins a small prize. This event is for the family.

Tales to tails

Sign up to read aloud to a registered therapy dog on Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library. Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. This program helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Each session is 15 minutes. Bring a book of your choice. This event is for children in grades kindergarten and up. Dogs are provided by K9’s for Compassion, a community partner of Pet Partners. Sign up is required. Call 330-744-8636 to schedule a slot.

Canfield High School art fair

Enjoy artwork by Canfield High School students at this special art show at the Canfield library Sept. 22-25 during regular hours. There will be a reception on Sept. 22 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. This event is open to the public.

TAB (Teen Advisory Board) Meeting

Join the Canfield library’s Teen Advisory Board (TAB) on Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. and get to know the new Canfield library, take a look at some new teen books and share ideas. A snack will be provided. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

This is a new monthly book club to discuss titles chosen “off the shelves” of the Canfield library’s new Book Club Room. September’s selections feature author C.J. Box in “Endangered” and “Blue Heaven.” Read one or both, or just come and join the fun. This event is for adults and will take place on Sept. 27 on 6:30 p.m.

Get fit at the library on Sept. 12, 19 and 26 from 8:30-9 a.m. with a 30-minute walk around the Canfield library neighborhood. Chaney Class of 1956 to have reunion

The Chaney High School Class of 1956 will host its 60th reunion on Sept. 24 from 5:30-10:30 p.m. at A La Carte Catering in Canfield (429 Lisbon St.). America’s Schoolmaster exhibit

The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
