In an emergency, police officers are often the first on the scene.

To assist police officers in responding to cardiac arrest, Sharon Regional Health Center has donated Automated External Defibrillators to seven area police departments.

The Brookfield Police Department, Hubbard Township and Hubbard City departments, and in Pennsylvania, the Farrell, Hermitage, Sharon and Sharpsville departments received AEDs on Wednesday during a news conference at the hospital, at 740 East State Street in Sharon, Pa.

“As we all know, a few seconds matter when someone’s having a heart attack,” Hubbard Township Police Chief Todd Coonce said. “They know the importance of us being first-responders, and we’re grateful that they stepped up.”

The township has a total of five AEDs, having received two from Sharon Regional Health Center. Coonce said the new defibrillators make it easier to administer a reduced shock level for an infant or small child.
