Impact beat Red Bulls 1-0 in first playoff leg

Matteo Mancosu scored in the second half and the Montreal Impact beat the New York Red Bulls 1-0 on Sunday in the opening match of their MLS Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Montreal will take a one-goal lead into the second leg of the two-game, aggregate-goals series next Sunday at Red Bull Arena.

The Impact were playing on only three days of rest after their 4-2 victory at D.C. United in the knockout round Thursday, when Mancosu scored twice. They were facing the top team in the Eastern Conference, led by MLS goals-leader Bradley Wright Phillips.

In the 61st, the Impact’s counter-attacking game clicked in as Marco Donadel lofted a high pass over the Red Bulls’ defense and, without breaking stride, former Bologna striker Mancosu drilled a high shot under the crossbar for his third of the postseason.

Giovani dos Santos scored his first career playoff goal in the 55th minute and the Los Angeles Galaxy beat the Colorado Rapids 1-0 on Sunday in Game 1 of the two-leg Western Conference semifinal series.

Los Angeles (13-6-16) had its 10th shutout of the season. Colorado (15-7-13) will host the second leg of the semifinal next Sunday.

Tim Howard made several quality saves in the first half for Colorado. He guarded the near post on Alan Gordon’s open header in the 17th minute and got a hand on Sebastian Lletget’s breakaway opportunity in the 22nd.

Toronto FC up 2-0 heading to second leg

Jozy Altidore scored in the 84th minute to break a feisty stalemate and substitute Tosaint Ricketts added a stoppage-time goal to give Toronto FC a 2-0 victory over New York City FC on Sunday night in Game 1 of the MLS Eastern Conference semifinal series.

The second game in the two-leg series is next Sunday at Yankee Stadium.

The go-ahead goal came from Michael Bradley’s free kick that NYCFC failed to clear. The ball bounced around the penalty box, with Ricketts taking a swing before it went to Altidore.

Ricketts made it 2-0 in injury time on a windy night at BMO Field, poking in Nick Hagglund’s cross on a second attempt. Ricketts came on in the 83rd minute.
