Lawsuit: N.M. sheriff challenged mayor to fight

PORTALES, N.M.

A lawsuit claims an eastern New Mexico sheriff is interfering with a town’s police business and even challenged its mayor to a “fist fight in the middle of the road.”

The town of Elida filed a lawsuit recently against Roosevelt County Sheriff Malin Parker to prevent him from further interfering with town ordinances or law enforcement.

According to the lawsuit, Parker has interfered with Elida police business on at least three occasions.

When Elida Mayor Durward Dixon attempted to ask Parker about the interference, court documents say Parker challenged the Dixon to a fist fight. Dixon told the Portales News-Tribune he tried twice to reconcile with the sheriff and filed the lawsuit as a last resort.

Parker said the fight challenge was “completely false.”

HOT SPRINGS, Ark.

A former county employee in Arkansas has been arrested after prosecutors accused her of using a county credit card to buy personal items including Arkansas Razorbacks tickets and a tuxedo for her dog.

The Sentinel-Record newspaper reported that Kristi Goss was arrested last week on six counts of fraudulent use of a credit card. Goss had worked as administrative assistant for the Garland County judge’s office.

According to an affidavit, investigators and auditors flagged about $200,000 in purchases made on the county’s credit card, including a diamond bracelet, Razorbacks tickets, pet insurance and the dog tuxedo, which was ordered from Amazon.

Court records do not list an attorney for Goss. Prosecutors have filed a request for a gag order preventing any comment on the case.
