CAMPBELL

The Campbell City Schools district has launched a campaign to raise funds for a new, two-story indoor recreation center.

Phase one of the Activity Recreation Center project will include locker rooms, bleachers, multipurpose rooms, a 160-meter track, volleyball courts and two full-size basketball courts.

Phase two will involve the addition of an auditorium for participation in the arts.

Officials plan to finance the project’s first phase through a combination of donations and about $2.5 million in carryover funds.

A concept drawing of the project was done by Olsavsky Jaminet Architects Inc. of Youngstown to showcase how the facility would look near the K-7 campus on state Route 616.

Officials have touted this location as a potential draw for a new library branch in the city. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is considering closing two of its locations to consolidate the Struthers, Campbell and Brownlee Woods branches. Campbell leaders have argued the library would be well-situated on state Route 616, near the upcoming recreation center.

Information about the center, including a brochure and a video, is available online at www.campbell.k12.oh.us.

To donate, visit www.payforit.net and select “Ohio” and then “Campbell City Schools” from the “fundraiser” menu options.

“It takes small donations from many kind individuals who believe in children and know that education is more than just reading, writing and arithmetic,” Superintendent Matthew Bowen said in a news release. “Through extracurricular activities and wellness, students of all ages learn skills that cannot be obtained from textbooks alone.”
