Program teaching Ohio fertilizer dealers to cut runoff grows
TOLEDO
A voluntary program that trains agricultural retailers how to reduce farm runoff that feeds harmful algae is being expanded across all of Ohio.
The Ohio AgriBusiness Association says the program will be open to all farm fertilizer sellers and service providers beginning next year.
The program was launched in early 2014 following an increase in algae blooms in Lake Erie and other waterways in Ohio.
It set out to train fertilizer sellers in the western Lake Erie area where the algae problems have been concentrated.
Researchers have estimated that two-thirds of the phosphorus that helps the algae grow comes from farm runoff.
Man charged after Ohio motorcyclist killed in crash
CINCINNATI
Authorities in southwest Ohio say an Indiana man has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide after crashing his pickup into the rear of a motorcycle, causing fatal injuries to its operator.
Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Neil says 21-year-old Brandon Bernhardt of Sunman was also charged early Saturday with leaving the scene of a fatal crash. Court records didn’t show an attorney for Bernhardt.
The sheriff says speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, on Interstate 74 at 3:10 a.m. EDT in Whitewater Township west of Cincinnati. The sheriff says both vehicles were eastbound, and that 55-year-old James Lamb of Cincinnati was ejected from his motorcycle.
Authorities say Lamb died at the scene. They say Bernhardt fled on foot, but was found in a wooded area by a K9 unit.
