The Youngstown Branch of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People celebrated its 98th annual Freedom Fund Banquet earlier this month and awarded three 2015-16 graduating high-school senior recipients with the NAACP Rev. Elizabeth Powell College Scholarship Award in the amount of $1,000.

This year’s NAACP recipients are:

Randah Abuhashim, a graduate of Chaney High School and also attended Choffin Career and Technical Center for two years majoring in biotechnology. She received an overall 3.84 GPA. Abuhashim is attending Youngstown State University majoring in pharmacy/biology.

Noor Khalayleh, a graduate of Chaney and attended Choffin for two years majoring in biotechnology. She received an overall 4.0 GPA. Khalayleh is attending YSU majoring in psychology.

Arianna Cuevas, a graduate of Boardman High School, who received an overall 3.5 GPA. Cuevas is attending YSU majoring in early childhood education.

Thiel College has appointed Roberta Leonard to the position of vice president for college advancement, effective Tuesday.

Over the past 15 years, Leonard had several positions in college advancement, including director of corporate, foundation, and government support; executive director of donor services; and executive director of the Thiel 2016 Capital Campaign.

Last spring, she was appointed interim vice president for college advancement. In that role, she oversaw the capital campaign as it surpassed its $60 million goal.

Recently, Leonard also was named to the Thrivent Fellows Program. The program is a rigorous 12-month executive fellowship designed to develop the leadership capacity of staff members at colleges and universities affiliated with the Lutheran church.

Leonard received her bachelor’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh, and joined Thiel College, located in Greenville, Pa., in 2001.

STATE PATROL

Trooper Michael S. Trader of the Ohio State Highway Patrol has been promoted to the rank of sergeant and will transfer from Cleveland District Criminal Patrol to serve at the Warren District Criminal Patrol.

Trader began his patrol career in October 1998 at the Wooster Post. In 1999, he transferred to the Hiram Post. In 2000, he transferred to the Ashtabula Post, where he was selected as Post Trooper of the Year in 2001.

In 2002, he earned the Ace Award for excellence in auto-larceny enforcement. He earned the Criminal Patrol Award in 2006, and from 2010 through 2016. In 2010, he transferred to his most recent assignment at Cleveland District Criminal Patrol, Canine Unit.
