Youngstown police are investigating a pair of shootings on the South Side
YOUNGSTOWN
Police are investigating a pair of unrelated shootings on the South Side that occurred about three hours apart.
“There’s no indication they’re connected,” said police Capt. Brad Blackburn.
A 55-year-old man is in stable condition after being shot in the stomach at his 1300 block home on East Florida Avenue at 1 a.m. Friday.
Police said the victim heard a knock on his door and when he opened it, three men were standing there, including one who shot him.
He was able to get to a neighbor, where police were called.
The victim was initially in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, but was upgraded to stable, Blackburn said.
Police were unable to talk to the victim Friday because of his wound to discuss the possible motive for the shooting or potential suspects, Blackburn said. The victim was only able to tell the first officer on the scene the basics of the shooting and that they were three black men, Blackburn said.
Meanwhile, a 19-year-old man was shot in the left thigh outside his Sherwood Avenue house.
Police said the Youngstown man told them he was standing outside his South Side home about 10 p.m. Thursday when a car drove by him, and he heard two shots. The victim realized he was hit in the left thigh, according to a police report.
The man got into his car and picked up his uncle before driving himself to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment. The man couldn’t identify the shooters and didn’t have a motive for the incident. He could only say the car that pulled up to him was black in color, police said.
He was not seriously injured, police said.
Meanwhile, his uncle, Randall Davis, 38, of Fairview Avenue, ended up getting arrested at the hospital on an outstanding warrant. Police said Davis had failed to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court on charges of operating a vehicle while impaired, driving under suspension and speeding.
After being held in the Mahoning County jail overnight, Davis was arraigned Friday with a return court date of Dec. 1.
