Fast and furriest
Join in on Nov. 12 for the fourth annual Fast and Furriest 5K Run / Walk at Waterworth Memorial Park-Pavilion 8 off Superior Ave in Salem. There will be a 500-meter dash with your dog at 8:45 a.m., followed by the 5k at 9:15 a.m. All proceeds from the race will benefit Legacy Dog Rescue. LDR is a 501c3 non-profit animal welfare organization helping dogs in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties and surrounding areas. Blue Christmas service
The holidays are generally a joyous time, but the loss of a loved one, a beloved pet or a life-changing situation can make them shine less bright. Harbor Light Hospice, Shepherd of the Valley and Lane Funeral Home invite you to their Blue Christmas, a service to offer support, healing and encouragement during the holidays on Dec. 6 at 6 p.m., with registration and refreshments starting at 5:30 p.m. They will be reflecting and remembering that which has lessened the glow this time of year. GA to meet
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
GFWC meeting to be Nov. 7
The next meeting of the GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Nov. 7 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members are to bring items for the shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. The BPJWL Juniorettes will be putting the shoeboxes together on Nov. 13. Items collected for local Veterans will be organized and delivered. The final donation will be monetary. Judge Shirley Christian will be the guest speaker that evening. Hostesses for the meeting are Tina Bellino, Joyce Martin and Sperry Rongone. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women ages 18 and up, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. ABWA anniversary dinner
The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will celebrate their anniversary dinner at The Manor at the corner of Kirk Road and Route 46 at 6 p.m. on Nov. 6. There will be a buffet, including penne pasta and meatballs, chicken parmesan, roasted potatoes, Key West vegetable mix, coffee and tea for $19. Sausage sandwich sale fundraiser to be Oct. 29
Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 2985 Center Road in Poland, will host a sausage sandwich sale and basket auction to support its Growth Fund. This fund covers expenses for capital improvements to assist in the congregation’s ministries. The fundraiser is scheduled for Oct. 29, 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., or until sandwiches are sold out. A suggested donation of $7 provides a sandwich, chips and a can of pop. Tickets for the basket auction are $1 per ticket or six for $5. Tickets can be purchased in the office, Monday through Friday mornings. There is no pre-sale for the sandwiches. Join the Poland library on Nov. 3 and 10 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Friends of the Poland Library meeting
Friends of the Poland Library will meet on Nov. 1. Coffee hour will be at 9:30 a.m. with the program and business meeting to follow. Hostesses will be Mary Jane Backus, Susan Beil, Reka Desai and Marion Gillette. The program will be presented by Dr. Marcelle Wilson from the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor. Donations of books, magazines, CDs and DVDs are accepted at each meeting for the Poland Friends book cart. The meeting is open to the public. New members are welcome. Membership dues are $10.
Roaming raffle
The Youngstown Regional Film Commission a non profit organization committed to bringing film-makers to the area. All over town you can win great food donated by local restaurants during the month of October with the Roaming Raffle. Poland Lions sponsor blanket drive
The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring a Blanket of Kindness drive Nov. 1-30. The group is collecting new and gently used blankets and comforters in sizes twin, full and queen for those children and families in need. Consider donating a blanket to help those in need in your community keep warm this winter. Blanket donation drop-off locations are Poland Methodist Church, Poland Home Savings, Wittenauer’s Cafe, Farmers National Bank, Town and Country Dry Cleaners, and Hair Together Salon, located at 5500 Market Street in Boardman (across from Market Street School). A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving
Good grief! It’s Thanksgiving! Join the Poland library on Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. as they celebrate with the traditional Charlie Brown Thanksgiving dinner: jelly beans, pretzels, toast and more. You’ll play games, make a craft and have some treats. This is for children of all ages.
MCCTC salon open
The Salon at MCCTC, located in the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, is open for business. The student run salon will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. beginning on Oct. 18. The cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, hair color, manicures, pedicures, facials and hair removal. Services are performed by the students under the supervision of their licensed instructor with prices starting at $5. Lions club hosts poster contest
The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring the Lions International Peace Poster Contest to students ages 11, 12 and 13 as of the date of Nov. 15, 2016. The theme this year is “A Celebration of Peace.“ Artwork must be no smaller than 13 inches by 20 inches and no bigger than 20 inches by 24 inches. Each entry must be the work of one student and original work of the student. An entry pack may be obtained at their school or by contacting the Poland Lions at 330-360-3641. A look at previous winning posters and a video about the contest can be found at the International Web site of www.lionsclubs.org. The local deadline for poster submission is Nov. 10.
A children’s holiday journey
Participate and explore the true meaning of this special season at the Poland library on Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. This festive performance by Learning Station will share a heartwarming, celebratory message of caring, sharing and joyful cheer. Join Don Monopoli and celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. A treat for the entire family. No reservations are needed.

Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Poland library on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for children ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library at 10 a.m. every Wednesday in November. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Join the Poland library on Nov. 17 at 10:30 a.m. for a special edition of Toddler Story Time. One-minute manners will be presented to youngsters, including “please and thank you,” “excuse me,” how to set the table and the proper way to eat soup. Includes developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children will receive a special place mat and must be accompanied by an adult.

Hogwarts potions class
Dress as your favorite wizard and join the Poland library on Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. for Potions 101. You will be sorted into houses and each group will visit the hands-on laboratory stations. The children’s concoctions are sure to please budding chemists. Registration is required so call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This is for tweens and teens grades 5 and up.
Yoga class
Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday in the Poland library meeting room from 5-6 p.m. Pay as you attend at $10 per session.
Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group
If you or anyone you know is interested in joining the free Youngstown Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group on Facebook, do so at https://www.facebook.com/groups/176949576044725/ . The group is made of patients and families with fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue syndrome, and are there to support, inform and help you to deal with these serious illnesses. The group was created by John Porterfield, M.Ed., who is a Certified Holistic Life Coach and Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Wellness Coach.
MCCTC flower shop opens
The student-run flower shop at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open for its fall open house, beginning on Sept. 16 and running throughout the month of October. A variety of fall silk floral arrangements and wreaths will be available. Fall mums are also available for sale and can be dressed for a gift or planted outside.The shop will be decorated and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. during this time. Extended hours are available upon request.Choose from a selection of pre-made items or purchase materials elsewhere and the students can create a beautiful piece for you. Fresh arrangements for any occasion can be made to order with a few days notice. Also they are taking orders for homecoming corsages.

The eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest
Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. Local libraries are sponsoring the eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life — some part of it or all of it — told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County. Contest runs from Oct. 1-31.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit
The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
