Canfield High School seniors and varsity soccer players Jad Saleh and Cece Shaer wanted to raise breast cancer awareness for their National Honor Society service projects, so they organized a Pink Out during the girls junior varsity and varsity soccer games against Hickory, and the boys junior varsity and varsity soccer games against Warren G. Harding on Oct. 8.
Through the Pink Outs, Shaer, daughter of James and Andrea Shaer, and Saleh, son of Ayman and Heidi Saleh, raised money for Yellow Brick Place, a cancer wellness center for the tri-county area, and the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center. Saleh and Shaer also sold Pink Out T-shirts during high school lunch periods and soccer games leading up to the Pink Outs.
Yellow Brick Place, co-founded by President Donna Detwiler and Vice President Anna Aey, provides support to cancer survivors, families and caregivers. The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center delivers accurate prevention, early detection, diagnosis and support services available in an environment of compassionate and coordinated care.
“The Yellow Brick Place offers a variety of services, including support counseling, a resource library and healing therapies. We helped 280 patients in the last year. We are here for both patients and caregivers. The soccer Pink Out is just wonderful. We appreciate it so much. We are so blessed to be involved in such a great program with the soccer teams. It is so great to see the students giving back and getting a better understanding about service. That is so important,” Detwiler said.
Players on both the boys junior varsity and varsity and girls junior varsity and varsity wore donated pink jerseys for their respective games. The Canfield Soccer Boosters donated pink socks for all players to wear for the games. All junior varsity and varsity players were announced prior to their games and cancer dedications to loved ones were announced for all players.
“I chose the Pink Out as my NHS project because it is a great cause. It is a great opportunity to raise breast cancer awareness. We have received such great support from the community. It humbles me to see the community come together and be willing to help for such a great cause. We have had so many donations from both the community and our soccer families,” Saleh said.
Saleh and Shaer also had a table set up to sell breast cancer awareness items, such as pink socks, pink scarves, pink bracelets, pink bandanas and pink ribbons. They also offered a variety of baked goods with a breast cancer awareness theme, many of which were baked by soccer parents. A raffle was also held for two breast cancer awareness blankets and several gift cards. Panera Bread donated pink ribbon bagels and White House Fruit Farm donated apples to the Pink Out.
