Neighbors | Abby Slanker.Canfield Village Middle School fifth-grade student Ava Arundel was named a winner in the Ohio Schools magazine’s annual Create a Cover Contest. Arundel’s was named one of three winners in the kindergarten through fourth-grade division while she was a fourth-grader at Hilltop Elementary School.

As a fourth-grade student at Hilltop Elementary School last year, Ava Arundel was named a winner in the Ohio Schools magazine Create a Cover Contest.
Hilltop’s Physical Education Teacher Linda Magyar sent in 21 entries to the annual design competition, with Arundel’s being named one of three winners in the kindergarten through fourth-grade division.
The contest is open to all students enrolled in grades K-12 in public schools in Ohio.
All winners were published in the June 2016 issue of Ohio Schools magazine, with the grand prize appearing on the cover.
As a Canfield Village Middle School fifth-grade student this school year, Arundel was excited to be named a winner.
“I was really excited to win. I enjoy drawing and I wanted to see if I could win the contest and I wanted to get my drawing in the magazine,” Arundel said.
The theme of the contest the students were to focus on this year was ‘What I like most about my school.’
Arundel focused on her favorite subject, Science.
“Science is my favorite subject, so I wanted to create a drawing about science to show how much I like it,” Arundel said.
Arundel was awarded a Barnes and Noble gift card, a thank you letter and a copy of Ohio Schools magazine.
Magyar presented all the students from Hilltop who entered the contest with a certificate of achievement.
“I told all my students about the contest and 21 of them turned in drawings. They all received certificates of achievement because they deserved some recognition for entering. I think it’s very impressive that Ava was one of three winners in her category, out of all the schools in Ohio,” Magyar said.
