Canfield Lions to host fish fry

The Canfield Lions will be hosting a Fish Fry on Nov. 4 at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon Street in Canfield. Dine from 4:30-7:30 p.m. with a menu of haddock (baked or fried), a choice of macaroni and cheese, haluski, pierogi or french fries; green beans or cole slaw; a roll, dessert and a beverage. The cost is $11.

Local church to have chicken dinner

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield, is having a drive-through chicken dinner on Nov. 3 from 4 p.m. until it is sold out. The cost is $8 and the menu will include stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and a brownie.

Spaghetti dinner

Lord of Life Church of Canfield will again serve their annual Election Day spaghetti dinner at Canfield High School cafeteria on Nov. 8. Dinner will be served from 4:30-8 p.m. The dinner includes spaghetti with homemade meat sauce, salad, rolls and butter, beverage and an assortment of homemade desserts. Take out orders are available. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance by calling the church office at 330-533-3531. Tickets for adults are $8, students are $4 and children under age 4 are free. Join for great food and fellowship. For questions, contact Doris Puerner at 330-565-6784. Proceeds will be earmarked for various ministries at Lord of Life Church.

Gathering place event

There will be a Gathering Place event on Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. at the Lord of Life Church. The speaker will be a local counselor Kurt Beler and his topic will be stress. Lunch will be provided by the Woodlands at Hampton Woods. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that is held on the second Monday of the month every month. Different games and activities are also offered each month. Join in a fulfilling afternoon of fun and socialization. Spread the word and bring your friends. Fast and furriest

Join in on Nov. 12 for the fourth annual Fast and Furriest 5K Run / Walk at Waterworth Memorial Park-Pavilion 8 off Superior Ave in Salem. There will be a 500-meter dash with your dog at 8:45 a.m., followed by the 5k at 9:15 a.m. All proceeds from the race will benefit Legacy Dog Rescue. LDR is a 501c3 non-profit animal welfare organization helping dogs in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties and surrounding areas. GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Autumn leaf candle holder

Get the family table ready for Thanksgiving with a pretty candle holder. Decorate mason jars with leaves in autumn colors and complete the look with a flameless candle at the Canfield library on Nov. 3 at 6:30 p.m. All supplies are provided. Call to reserve your mason jar. This is for adults.

GFWC meeting to be Nov. 7

The next meeting of the GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Nov. 7 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members are to bring items for the shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. The BPJWL Juniorettes will be putting the shoeboxes together on Nov. 13. Items collected for local Veterans will be organized and delivered. The final donation will be monetary. Judge Shirley Christian will be the guest speaker that evening. Hostesses for the meeting are Tina Bellino, Joyce Martin and Sperry Rongone. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women ages 18 and up, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. ABWA anniversary dinner

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will celebrate their anniversary dinner at The Manor at the corner of Kirk Road and Route 46 at 6 p.m. on Nov. 6. There will be a buffet, including penne pasta and meatballs, chicken parmesan, roasted potatoes, Key West vegetable mix, coffee and tea for $19. Trick-or-Treat date change

Canfield City has changed the date of it’s Trick-or-Treat to Oct. 31 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

MCCTC salon open

The Salon at MCCTC, located in the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, is open for business. The student run salon will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. beginning on Oct. 18. The cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, hair color, manicures, pedicures, facials and hair removal. Services are performed by the students under the supervision of their licensed instructor with prices starting at $5. Roaming raffle

The Youngstown Regional Film Commission a non profit organization committed to bringing film-makers to the area. All over town you can win great food donated by local restaurants during the month of October with the Roaming Raffle. Playtime at your library

Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Canfield library on Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for children ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.

Fantastic beasts

Come to the Canfield library on Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. to celebrate the opening of the new movie featuring the amazing creatures of Harry Potter’s world. There will be trivia, snacks and giveaways. This is for tweens and teens.

Canfield High School student is 2016 Outstanding Young Philanthropist

A Canfield High School student was selected by the Association of Fundraising Professionals as the 2016 Outstanding Young Philanthropist honoree for Mahoning and Shenango counties. Kate Jenkins, a junior, will be honored at the National Philanthropy Day Event on Nov. 18, during an awards ceremony at Mr. Anthony’s from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Jenkins was nominated by Becky Keck, Executive Director of the SMARTS program, with letters of support written by Craig Olson, Canfield School Board President, high school students and a member of the Youngstown Junior Women’s League. She was nominated for her fundraising efforts that led to the creation of the first ever Art Club at Canfield High School.

“Invisible” Ancestors: tips for finding the females in your family tree

Whether due to surname changes when they marry or because of legal and social conditions throughout history, finding the female members in your family tree often presents special problems and challenges. Come and learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library on Nov. 17 at 10 a.m. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones. Tales to tails

Sign up to read aloud to a registered therapy dog at the Canfield library on Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Each session is 15 minutes. Bring a book of your choice. This is for children grades K and up. What is a tessellation? How is a tessellation created? You will use simple shapes to create amazing artwork at the Canfield library on Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. Interactive and fun and projects can be taken home. This event is for children in grades 4-6.

Pok ®mon 3-D program

Calling all Pok ®mon fans. Are you still trying to catch them all? Come to the Canfield library on Nov. 5 at 11 a.m. and create your own 3-D model of a Pok ®ball to add your collection. Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group

If you or anyone you know is interested in joining the free Youngstown Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group on Facebook, do so at https://www.facebook.com/groups/176949576044725/ . The group is made of patients and families with fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue syndrome, and are there to support, inform and help you to deal with these serious illnesses. The group was created by John Porterfield, M.Ed., who is a Certified Holistic Life Coach and Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Wellness Coach.

MCCTC flower shop opens

The student-run flower shop at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open for its fall open house, beginning on Sept. 16 and running throughout the month of October. A variety of fall silk floral arrangements and wreaths will be available. Fall mums are also available for sale and can be dressed for a gift or planted outside. The shop will be decorated and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. during this time. Extended hours are available upon request. Choose from a selection of pre-made items or purchase materials elsewhere and the students can create a beautiful piece for you. Fresh arrangements for any occasion can be made to order with a few days notice. Also they are taking orders for homecoming corsages.

The eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. Local libraries are sponsoring the eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life—some part of it or all of it—told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County. Contest runs from Oct. 1-31.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit

The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
