Bin sale
On Nov. 12, Boardman High School National Honor Society is hosting its annual Bin Sale from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the high school. There you can sell your antiques, electronics, clothes, etc. in a 5x5 spot, for $5. You can even buy multiple spots. All the proceeds go to Boardman NHS, while all the profit on items you sell goes in your pocket. Knights of Columbus to have dinner
St Charles Knights of Columbus in Boardman will host a spaghetti and meatball dinner 11:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Oct. 30 in Fr. Haidet Hall. A meal including salad, cake and beverage is $8 for adults and here are special children’s rates. Separate sale meatballs available too. Carry out will be available beginning at 10:30 a.m. A snow thrower, other baskets and 50/50 raffles will be conducted.
GFWC meeting to be Nov. 7
The next meeting of the GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Nov. 7 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members are to bring items for the shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. The BPJWL Juniorettes will be putting the shoeboxes together on Nov. 13. Items collected for local Veterans will be organized and delivered. The final donation will be monetary. Judge Shirley Christian will be the guest speaker that evening. Hostesses for the meeting are Tina Bellino, Joyce Martin and Sperry Rongone. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women ages 18 and up, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. ABWA dinner
The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will celebrate their anniversary dinner at The Manor at the corner of Kirk Road and Route 46 at 6 p.m. Nov. 6. There will be a buffet, including penne pasta and meatballs, chicken parmesan, roasted potatoes, Key West vegetable mix, coffee and tea for $19. The guest speaker for the evening will be David Kohut, who is founder of “Talk is Cheap”. Reservations will be due by Oct. 27.
Scholarship committee to host bake sale
The Mickey Schuster Scholarship Committee of Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman, will host an election day bake sale on Nov. 8. A variety of baked goods and coffee will be sold, starting at 6:30 a.m. All proceeds will go to the Mickey Schuster Scholarship Fund and are distributed each year to college students at Bethel.
MCCTC salon open
The Salon at MCCTC, located in the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, is open for business. The student run salon will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. beginning on Oct. 18. The cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, hair color, manicures, pedicures, facials and hair removal. Services are performed by the students under the supervision of their licensed instructor with prices starting at $5. GA to meet
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
Recording your personal history
Join the Boardman library on Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. for the second of the workshops about creating a memoir of your personal recollections to pass on to your family’s future generations. Based on Bob Greene’s book, “To Our Children’s Children,” you will discuss a variety of subjects you may wish to consider for inclusion, how to organize your project and methods to use for recording and preserving your personal history. Instructional handouts are included. Attend one or all of the workshops. Projects can be completed in time for holiday gift giving. Poland Lions sponsor blanket drive
The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring a Blanket of Kindness drive Nov. 1-30. The group is collecting new and gently used blankets and comforters in sizes twin, full and queen for those children and families in need. Consider donating a blanket to help those in need in your community keep warm this winter. Blanket donation drop-off locations are Poland Methodist Church, Poland Home Savings, Wittenauer’s Cafe, Farmers National Bank, Town and Country Dry Cleaners, and Hair Together Salon, located at 5500 Market Street in Boardman (across from Market Street School). Roaming raffle
The Youngstown Regional Film Commission a non profit organization committed to bringing film-makers to the area. All over town you can win great food donated by local restaurants during the month of October with the Roaming Raffle. Each participating venue will have the Roaming Raffle tickets available for $3 for a sheet of 26 tickets. You can use all 26 in one location or “Roam” to another participating venues and deposit some tickets there. Playtime at your library
Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in November. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Tales for 2’s and 3’s
Join the Boardman library Nov. 2, 9 and 30 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Parachute play
Bring the whole family to the Boardman library on Nov. 22 at 6:30 p.m. or Nov. 23 at 10 a.m. for stories and parachute play to this 30-minute story time. This event is fun for all ages.
Lego my library
Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.
Night owl story time
This is an evening story time for children ages 3-5. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in this 30-minute program featuring finger plays, stories and a craft activity at the Boardman library Tuesdays in November at 6:30 p.m.
Clothespin picture frame
Join the Boardman library on Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in creating a piece of art for your pictures. Bring photographs of things you are thankful for this season and share stories while painting and decorating a frame using clothespins. Registration is required. This is for teens in grades 7-12.
TAB meeting
Check out the monthly TAB meeting. They meet the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. This month’s meeting will take place on Nov. 2 at 6:30 p.m. Help plan and support teen activities at the library. Meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are welcome. This is for teens in grades 7-12.
Check into chess
Join the Boardman library on Nov. 6 at 1:30 p.m. as they play chess this afternoon. This is a family program for all ages. If you would like to learn to play, they’ll be happy to teach you.
BUMC has ham loaf sale
The Boardman United Methodist Church, located at 6809 Market Street, will host a ham loaf sale on Nov. 1 from 12:30 p.m. until it is sold out. The loaves will be sold in packages of 6 for $15. There will be no preorders.
Medicare Informational Program
Join the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program volunteer for this informational program for those approaching Medicare, or for those needing to meet Medicare’s open enrollment deadline of Dec. 7 at the Boardman library on Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. They will discuss basic Medicare, supplemental insurance, prescription drug options and more. Take-home handouts will be provided.
Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group
If you or anyone you know is interested in joining the free Youngstown Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group on Facebook, do so at https://www.facebook.com/groups/176949576044725/ . The group is made of patients and families with fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue syndrome, and are there to support, inform and help you to deal with these serious illnesses. The group was created by John Porterfield, M.Ed., who is a Certified Holistic Life Coach and Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Wellness Coach.
MCCTC flower shop opens
The student-run flower shop at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open for its fall open house, beginning on Sept. 16 and running throughout the month of October. A variety of fall silk floral arrangements and wreaths will be available. Fall mums are also available for sale and can be dressed for a gift or planted outside. The shop will be decorated and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. during this time. Extended hours are available upon request. Choose from a selection of pre-made items or purchase materials elsewhere and the students can create a beautiful piece for you. Fresh arrangements for any occasion can be made to order with a few days notice. Also they are taking orders for homecoming corsages.
UFO’s: The truth is out there
Enjoy this presentation on Oct. 29 at 3:30 p.m. at the Boardman library on UFO’s from a historical perspective with emphasis on the best investigated cases. Chris Parsons of the Mutual UFO Network, one of the oldest and largest civilian UFO-investigative organizations in the United States, will explain why many believe that the truth is out there. This event is for teens and adults.

The eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest
Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. Local libraries are sponsoring the eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life — some part of it or all of it — told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County. The contest runs from Oct. 1-31.
It’s all about yarn
Bring in your crochet, knitting, plastic canvas or “anything with yarn” project and learn from one another at the Boardman library on Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring all yarn UFOs (unfinished objects). This event is for adults.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit
The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
