GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

ABWA anniversary dinner

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will celebrate their anniversary dinner at The Manor at the corner of Kirk Road and Route 46 at 6 p.m. on Nov. 6. There will be a buffet, including penne pasta and meatballs, chicken parmesan, roasted potatoes, Key West vegetable mix, coffee and tea for $19. The guest speaker for the evening will be David Kohut, who is founder of “Talk is Cheap”. Reservations will be due by Oct. 27.

MCCTC salon open

The Salon at MCCTC, located in the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, is open for business. The student run salon will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. beginning on Oct. 18. The cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, hair color, manicures, pedicures, facials and hair removal. Services are performed by the students under the supervision of their licensed instructor with prices starting at $5. Local church to have fall event

Grace Lutheran Church, located at 162 South Raccoon Road in Austintown, will host its annual fall sale on Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. In addition to miscellaneous items, food and drinks, including homemade beef vegetable soup, pork and sauerkraut sandwiches, pop, coffee, etc. will be for sale. All proceeds from the sale will be used to support local charities and the church’s women’s programs.

Roaming raffle

The Youngstown Regional Film Commission a non profit organization committed to bringing film-makers to the area. All over town you can win great food donated by local restaurants during the month of October with the Roaming Raffle. Each participating venue will have the Roaming Raffle tickets available for $3 for a sheet of 26 tickets. You can use all 26 in one location or “Roam” to another participating venues and deposit some tickets there. Find the fantastic beasts

Newt’s beasts have escaped his suitcase and made their way to the library. Find them, match them and answer the riddle at the Austintown library during library hours in November. All participants earn a prize. One winner receives a grand prize. Your journey begins in the teen department. This is for tweens and teens in grades 4-12.

GFWC meeting to be Nov. 7

The next meeting of the GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Nov. 7 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members are to bring items for the shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. The BPJWL Juniorettes will be putting the shoeboxes together on Nov. 13. Items collected for local Veterans will be organized and delivered. The final donation will be monetary. Judge Shirley Christian will be the guest speaker that evening. Hostesses for the meeting are Tina Bellino, Joyce Martin and Sperry Rongone. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women ages 18 and up, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. If you bring a mouse to the library

Celebrate National Picture Book Month by inviting Cookie Mouse from the beloved children’s book “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” to the Austintown library on Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. Enjoy activities and get your picture taken with Cookie Mouse. Light refreshments will be provided. This event is for children of all ages.

Playtime at your library

Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Austintown library on Nov. 17 at 10 a.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. For ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.

Pre-Kindergarten story time

This program is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills and will take place every Wednesday in November at the Austintown library at 11:30 am. You will use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Austintown library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in November. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2’s & 3’s

Join the Austintown library every Wednesday in November at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Gotta move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Austintown library on Nov. 3 and 10 at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, and talk and play.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Austintown library on Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. and Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Read to Reese

Come and read to Reese, a therapy dog from Pet Partners at the Austintown library on Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. Bring your own book, or we will find one for you, and read to a furry friend. Registration is required, for space is limited. Register online or by calling 330-744-8636 and ask for the Austintown library. This is for school-age children.

Vote for your favorite picture book character

It’s voting season so come to the Austintown library during library hours in November to vote for your favorite picture book character in honor of National Picture Book Month.

Local church to host seminar aimed at veteran care

Redeemer Lutheran Church will host a workshop titled “Binding the Wounds of War” on Nov. 5 at the church, located at 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown. The seminar/workshop is being offered in order to better prepare our community, and specifically those who work and live with veterans, to help veterans make healthy transitions back into civilian life. The workshop is open to clergy, Stephens Ministers, counselors, therapists, social workers and anyone who wants to help our veterans and their families. Attendees will: 1. Have a greater understanding of traumatic stress injuries and how to identify the most common forms of this type of injury; 2. Understand how military culture affects service members and their return to civilian life; 3. Understand the unique challenges of military service as it relates to barriers between caregivers, service members and their families. This will be an all-day workshop from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. with coffee, snacks and lunch provided. MCCTC flower shop opens

The student-run flower shop at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open for its fall open house, beginning on Sept. 16 and running throughout the month of October. A variety of fall silk floral arrangements and wreaths will be available. Fall mums are also available for sale and can be dressed for a gift or planted outside. The shop will be decorated and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. during this time. Extended hours are available upon request. Choose from a selection of pre-made items or purchase materials elsewhere and the students can create a beautiful piece for you. Fresh arrangements for any occasion can be made to order with a few days notice. Also they are taking orders for homecoming corsages.

TAB meeting

Join the Austintown area TAB. Help plan and support teen activities at the library on Nov. 12 at 3 p.m. Meet new people and have fun. Snacks will be provided. This is for teens in grades 7-12.

Do you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have? Drop in to the Canfield library during library hours to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons.

Eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest begins Oct. 1

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member who was lost to cancer. Local libraries are sponsoring the eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life — some part of it or all of it — told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County. Contest runs from Oct. 1-31.

Saxon flea market

The Saxon Club will host its Flea Market every Tuesday through October (weather permitting). The Flea Maket starts at 8 a.m. (vendors can set up early) and ends at 2 p.m. Large spaces are provided for $5 per space. A variety of items will be available such as household goods, books, tools and collectables. Refreshments are available. The Saxon Club is located at 710 S. Meridian Road, on the west side of Youngstown.

Grab and go craft

Make a craft to take home at the Austintown library during library hours in October. This is for children of all ages.

Guess the scary book

Can you guess the horror book title from cut up pages in a jar? One winner will be chosen at random from the correct entries at the Austintown library during library hours on Saturdays in October. This event is for adults.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit

The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
