Joyce, 65, tops 2015 Peace Race time

YOUNGSTOWN

Like a fine wine, Tom Joyce is improving with age.

Joyce, a Youngstown native, finished the 10K Peace Race in a time of 54:13, or 26 seconds faster than his 2015 performance.

Not bad for a man who is retired, 65 and only recently began running distances seriously.

Joyce, who now lives of Ithaca, N.Y, placed seventh in the 65-and-older division and 278th overall out of 1,000-plus runners.

“I enjoy meeting runners from all over the world in this race,” Joyce said. “We all come here for the same reason - for world peace.”

It’s the third time he’s completed a race this distance or longer in the past four months.

“I look to return next year and run an even faster time,” said Joyce.

He’s a 1969 Ursuline High graduate.

Fresno State fires DeRuyter as coach

FRESNO, Calif.

Fresno State fired coach Tim DeRuyter on Sunday after the Bulldogs dropped to 1-7 in his fifth season.

After winning the Mountain West title in each of his first two seasons at Fresno State, DeRuyter’s teams struggled once star quarterback Derek Carr left for the NFL.

Offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau has been named the interim head coach. The Bulldogs host Air Force on Friday night.

DeRuyter is 30-30 at Fresno State, but he went 20-6 his first two seasons. The Bulldogs won a total of nine games the next two seasons and lost Saturday 38-20 at Utah State.

DeRuyter has two years left on a five-year contract that was worth $7.5 million.

Lewis Hamilton wins U.S. Grand Prix

AUSTIN, Texas

Lewis Hamilton got the victory he needed to keep his Formula One championship hopes alive, winning the U.S. Grand Prix for the fourth time in five years Sunday.

Hamilton cut Mercedes teammate and championship leader Nico Rosberg’s points lead to 26 with three races to go. Rosberg finished second ahead of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo to maintain a relatively comfortable cushion over Hamilton in the title chase.

Rosberg doesn’t have to win any of the final three races to get his first career Formula One championship, even if Hamilton wins all of them. Two more seconds and a third place will wrap it up. But that also means Rosberg can’t afford a bad race if Hamilton is going to make a late charge.
