NFL reopens case against Giants’ kicker

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.

The NFL is going to re-open its investigation of New York Giants placekicker Josh Brown and the team has pulled him from its next game after police released journal entries and emails in which he admitted that he verbally and physically abused his former wife.

Just hours before the Giants were to leave for a game in London on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams, they said that Brown would remain at home.

The Giants said they want to review the new information released by county law enforcement officials in Washington and reach a decision on the kicker’s future with the club, possibly next week.

The 37-year old was suspended for the opening game of the season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy relating to his arrest in May 2015 on domestic abuse charges against his former wife, Molly. He was not charged.

UConn football players face weapons charges

STORRS, CONN.

Two University of Connecticut football players have been arrested on drug and weapons charges and suspended from the team.

UConn police say linebacker Nazir Williams and defensive lineman Felton Blackwell, both 19, were pulled over Wednesday night after officers saw their vehicle had only one working headlight and had drifted over the center line.

Police say they found four grams of marijuana, a BB gun, and an open container of vodka in the car.

Both players are charged with having the gun in a vehicle, and Williams is also charged with possession of drugs and alcohol. Both are due in court on Nov. 1.

The players, both redshirt freshmen, did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment and it was not immediately clear if either had hired an attorney.

Penguins re-sign goalie Matt Murray

PITTSBURGH

The Pittsburgh Penguins rewarded goaltender Matt Murray’s work in the Stanley Cup playoffs with a new contract.

The team announced on Thursday that Murray has agreed to a three-year extension that will run through the 2019-2020 season and carries an average annual value of $3.75 million.

The 22-year-old Murray helped the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth championship last spring after taking over for injured Marc-Andre Fleury and holding onto the job once Fleury returned from a concussion. Murray went 15-6 with a 2.08 goals against average and a .923 save percentage in the postseason.

Murray has yet to play this season while recovering from a broken hand suffered while playing for Team North America in the World Cup of Hockey.

NCAA serves Louisville with violations

LOUISVILLE, Ky.

The NCAA is accusing Louisville of four violations stemming from its investigation of allegations that a former men’s basketball staffer hired escorts and strippers for sex parties with Cardinals recruits and players.

The governing body’s report was released Thursday. The letter does not mention a lack of institutional control — considered the most serious violation — but says coach Rick Pitino failed to monitor staffer Andre McGee.

The NCAA’s letter is the first step in a process that could extend into next spring according to the timetable of responses and hearings on the allegations. Louisville has 90 days to respond.
