Sausage sandwich sale fundraiser to be Oct. 29

Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 2985 Center Road in Poland, will host a sausage sandwich sale and basket auction to support its Growth Fund. This fund covers expenses for capital improvements to assist in the congregation’s ministries. The fundraiser is scheduled for Oct. 29, 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., or until sandwiches are sold out. A suggested donation of $7 provides a sandwich, chips and a can of pop. Tickets for the basket auction are $1 per ticket or six for $5. Tickets can be purchased in the office, Monday through Friday mornings. There is no pre-sale for the sandwiches. Thrivent Financial is providing support for this event with a grant for a Thrivent Action Team. For more information, contact Pastor Julianne Smith at 330-757-3272.

Girls Scouts host open house

Girls from Boardman and Poland are invited to learn more about Girl Scouts on Oct. 24. An open house will take place in the Poland library meeting room from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to girls in grades K-12. Stop by and meet current Girl Scouts and leaders and see how fun and rewarding the Girl Scout program can be. Information on Girl Scouts can also be found at gsneo.org.

Friends of the Poland Library meeting

Friends of the Poland Library will meet on Nov. 1. Coffee hour will be at 9:30 a.m. with the program and business meeting to follow. Hostesses will be Mary Jane Backus, Susan Beil, Reka Desai and Marion Gillette. The program will be presented by Dr. Marcelle Wilson from the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor. Donations of books, magazines, CDs and DVDs are accepted at each meeting for the Poland Friends book cart. The meeting is open to the public. New members are welcome. Membership dues are $10.

Trunk or treat

“Trunk or Treat” is a unique way to celebrate Halloween and will take place on Oct. 30 in the Holy Family Church parking lot. Adults and children will decorate the trunks of their cars, and children will visit each car to trick or treat and, later, judge each car to selected the best decorated one of the bunch. There will be games, prizes, face painting and an award for the best decorated trunk. All ages are welcome. Registration will begin at 3:30 p.m. and the fun and games will run from 4-5:30 p.m. This event will be sponsored by Holy Family Knights of Columbus.

MCCTC salon open

The Salon at MCCTC, located in the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, is open for business. The student run salon will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. beginning on Oct. 18. The cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, hair color, manicures, pedicures, facials and hair removal. Services are performed by the students under the supervision of their licensed instructor with prices starting at $5. Roaming raffle

The Youngstown Regional Film Commission a non profit organization committed to bringing film-makers to the area. All over town you can win great food donated by local restaurants during the month of October with the Roaming Raffle. Each participating venue will have the Roaming Raffle tickets available for $3 for a sheet of 26 tickets. You can use all 26 in one location or “Roam” to another participating venues and deposit some tickets there. GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Poland Lions sponsor blanket drive

The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring a Blanket of Kindness drive Nov. 1-30. The group is collecting new and gently used blankets and comforters in sizes twin, full and queen for those children and families in need. Consider donating a blanket to help those in need in your community keep warm this winter. Blanket donation drop-off locations are Poland Methodist Church, Poland Home Savings, Wittenauer’s Cafe, Farmers National Bank, Town and Country Dry Cleaners, and Hair Together Salon, located at 5500 Market Street in Boardman (across from Market Street School). Lions club hosts poster contest

The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring the Lions International Peace Poster Contest to students ages 11, 12 and 13 as of the date of Nov. 15, 2016. The theme this year is “A Celebration of Peace.“ Artwork must be no smaller than 13 inches by 20 inches and no bigger than 20 inches by 24 inches. Each entry must be the work of one student and original work of the student. An entry pack may be obtained at their school or by contacting the Poland Lions at 330-360-3641. A look at previous winning posters and a video about the contest can be found at the International Web site of www.lionsclubs.org. The local deadline for poster submission is Nov. 10.

Knitting guild to have Oct. 22 meeting

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Oct. 22 from 2-5 p.m. at the Canfield library, located at 43 W. Main Street in Canfield. The purpose of this meeting is to join knitted and crocheted sections to form blankets for the Warm Up America campaign. All wishing to help with this project are to bring scissors, darning needles and any washable acrylic yarn they wish to donate. Newcomers of Mahoning Valley to have luncheon

Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will have its monthly luncheon meeting on Oct. 26 at O’Charley’s in Boardman. The social gathering will start at 11:30 a.m. with lunch following at 12 p.m. The speaker will be Victoria Korb from Smart Body, who will be speaking about how different physical therapy techniques can lead to a healthier life. The group is back to an active calendar with Needlework, Roundtowners, Movie Club, Book Club and Birthday Club all scheduled for this month. Poland Historical Society has upcoming events

The Little Red Schoolhouse (4515 Center Road) will be open to public from 1–3 p.m. on Oct. 23. Fall crafts and pumpkin painting will be available for children. This is a free event. The Historical Society would like to complete their collection of Poland Seminary High School yearbooks. Missing from the collection are: 1936, 1937, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1970 to the present. They are also looking to complete a collection of the Firemen’s phone directories from the 1960’s up to and including 1971. A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

Good grief! It’s Thanksgiving! Join the Poland library on Nov. 19 at 2:30 p.m. as they celebrate with the traditional Charlie Brown Thanksgiving dinner: jelly beans, pretzels, toast and more. You’ll play games, make a craft and have some treats. This is for children of all ages.

A children’s holiday journey

Participate and explore the true meaning of this special season at the Poland library on Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. This festive performance by Learning Station will share a heartwarming, celebratory message of caring, sharing and joyful cheer. Join Don Monopoli and celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. A treat for the entire family. No reservations are needed.

Playtime at your library

Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Poland library on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for children ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library at 10 a.m. every Wednesday in November. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

Join the Poland library on Nov. 3 and 10 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Macaroni and please

Join the Poland library on Nov. 17 at 10:30 a.m. for a special edition of Toddler Story Time. One-minute manners will be presented to youngsters, including “please and thank you,” “excuse me,” how to set the table and the proper way to eat soup. Includes developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children will receive a special place mat and must be accompanied by an adult.

Fun time for 4’s and 5’s

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Poland library on Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Listen and Lego

Listen to a story and then have fun building with Legos at the Poland library on Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. Legos will be provided. This is for children ages 4-7.

Read to Roxie

Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International at the Poland library on Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This is for children in grades 1-4.

Trim a tree for November

Decorate an ornament for the all-seasons tree at the Poland library during library hours in November. This is for children of all ages.

Hogwarts potions class

Dress as your favorite wizard and join the Poland library on Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. for Potions 101. You will be sorted into houses and each group will visit the hands-on laboratory stations. The children’s concoctions are sure to please budding chemists. Registration is required so call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This is for tweens and teens grades 5 and up.

Yoga class

Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday in the Poland library meeting room from 5-6 p.m. Pay as you attend at $10 per session.

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group

If you or anyone you know is interested in joining the free Youngstown Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group on Facebook, do so at https://www.facebook.com/groups/176949576044725/ . The group is made of patients and families with fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue syndrome, and are there to support, inform and help you to deal with these serious illnesses. The group was created by John Porterfield, M.Ed., who is a Certified Holistic Life Coach and Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Wellness Coach.

MCCTC flower shop opens

The student-run flower shop at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open for its fall open house, beginning on Sept. 16 and running throughout the month of October. A variety of fall silk floral arrangements and wreaths will be available. Fall mums are also available for sale and can be dressed for a gift or planted outside.The shop will be decorated and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. during this time. Extended hours are available upon request.Choose from a selection of pre-made items or purchase materials elsewhere and the students can create a beautiful piece for you. Fresh arrangements for any occasion can be made to order with a few days notice. Also they are taking orders for homecoming corsages.

East Class of 1962 to have fall dinner

East High School Class of 1962 classmates will have their fall dinner at 6 p.m. on Oct. 22 at Donavito’s in Struthers.

FAFSA workshop

Join on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. at the PSHS auditorium to learn about earlier access to the FAFSA, as well as earlier deadlines for priority consideration at major schools. Attendance is strongly recommended, even if you have filed the FAFSA before. Junior and senior parents are welcome and the focus will be on the seniors getting ready to file the FAFSA now. The eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. Local libraries are sponsoring the eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life — some part of it or all of it — told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County. Contest runs from Oct. 1-31.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit

The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
