Neighbors | Submitted. The Spartan boys cross country team posed with their first place award after winning the Mahoning County Championship Meet.

Boardman’s Chris Butler raced to a first place finish in a time of 16:37 to lead the Spartans to the 2016 Mahoning County Championship on Sept. 24 at Austintown Township Park.

Fitch was second, followed by Poland and Canfield. The Spartans last won the title in 2013.

The Spartans placed seven runners in the top thirty and placed four of the top ten scoring spots to earn the championship; following Butler was senior Nick Digiacomo in third place in a time of 17:12, freshman Mitchell Dunham in sixth place at a new personal best time of 17:31 and junior Mark Moradian in tenth place in a time of 17:51. They were followed by senior Nathaniel Ams in 13th in a time of 18:06, junior Luke Hetzel 25th overall in 18:41 and senior Matt Maroni in 27th at 18:48.

“We really wanted to bring the county championship back to Boardman,” said Spartan Head Coach John Phillips. “We have a rivalry with Fitch, just like every other sport does at BHS, we have a lot respect for them, and regaining this championship after a two year hiatus is a big deal.”
