Girls Scouts host open house

Girls from Boardman and Poland are invited to learn more about Girl Scouts on Oct. 24. An open house will take place in the Poland library meeting room from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to girls in grades K-12. Stop by and meet current Girl Scouts and leaders and see how fun and rewarding the Girl Scout program can be. Information on Girl Scouts can also be found at gsneo.org.

MCCTC salon open

The Salon at MCCTC, located in the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, is open for business. The student run salon will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. beginning on Oct. 18. The cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, hair color, manicures, pedicures, facials and hair removal. Services are performed by the students under the supervision of their licensed instructor with prices starting at $5. Roaming raffle

The Youngstown Regional Film Commission a non profit organization committed to bringing film-makers to the area. All over town you can win great food donated by local restaurants during the month of October with the Roaming Raffle. Each participating venue will have the Roaming Raffle tickets available for $3 for a sheet of 26 tickets. You can use all 26 in one location or “Roam” to another participating venues and deposit some tickets there. Sponsoring venues are Susie’s Dogs & Drafts in Boardman - win two dogs with tater tots each week for a month; The Royal Oaks Youngstown win choice of burger with fries or rib sampler once a week for a month; O’Donold’s Irish Pub & Grill downtown and Austintown - win any entree on the menu once a week for a month; Avalon downtown - win a 12 inch one-topping pizza each week for a month; V2 Wine Bar Trattoria - win any lunch or dinner entree four times (four gift cards will be given); Coaches Burgers in Boardman and Poland - win two $25 gift cards; Patsy’s Bar & Grille is hosting a 50/50 raffle and winner will receive free dinner also; Draught House - win a signed Andrew Bryniarski, “Texas Chainsaw Leatherface” picture and gift basket from Chalet Premier; Donavito’s - win 20 percent off entire bill anytime you dine for month of November and Ryes and Imbibe downtown will have 12 gift baskets from local area mechants and restaurants. Knitting guild to have Oct. 22 meeting

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Oct. 22 from 2-5 p.m. at the Canfield library, located at 43 W. Main Street in Canfield. The purpose of this meeting is to join knitted and crocheted sections to form blankets for the Warm Up America campaign. All wishing to help with this project are to bring scissors, darning needles and any washable acrylic yarn they wish to donate. Poland Lions sponsor blanket drive

The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring a Blanket of Kindness drive Nov. 1-30. The group is collecting new and gently used blankets and comforters in sizes twin, full and queen for those children and families in need. Consider donating a blanket to help those in need in your community keep warm this winter. Blanket donation drop-off locations are Poland Methodist Church, Poland Home Savings, Wittenauer’s Cafe, Farmers National Bank, Town and Country Dry Cleaners, and Hair Together Salon, located at 5500 Market Street in Boardman (across from Market Street School). Newcomers of Mahoning Valley to have luncheon

Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will have its monthly luncheon meeting on Oct. 26 at O’Charley’s in Boardman. The social gathering will start at 11:30 a.m. with lunch following at 12 p.m. The speaker will be Victoria Korb from Smart Body, who will be speaking about how different physical therapy techniques can lead to a healthier life. The group is back to an active calendar with Needlework, Roundtowners, Movie Club, Book Club and Birthday Club all scheduled for this month. Scholarship committee to host bake sale to benefit scholarship

The Mickey Schuster Scholarship Committee of Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman, will host an election day bake sale on Nov. 8. A variety of baked goods and coffee will be sold, starting at 6:30 a.m. All proceeds will go to the Mickey Schuster Scholarship Fund and are distributed each year to college students at Bethel.

Parachute play

Bring the whole family to the Boardman library on Nov. 22 at 6:30 p.m. or Nov. 23 at 10 a.m. for stories and parachute play to this 30-minute story time. This event is fun for all ages.

GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Recording your personal history

Join the Boardman library on Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. for the second of the workshops about creating a memoir of your personal recollections to pass on to your family’s future generations. Based on Bob Greene’s book, “To Our Children’s Children,” you will discuss a variety of subjects you may wish to consider for inclusion, how to organize your project and methods to use for recording and preserving your personal history. Instructional handouts are included. Attend one or all of the workshops. Projects can be completed in time for holiday gift giving. Playtime at your library

Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This event is for ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library at 10 a.m. every Tuesday in November. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

Join the Boardman library Nov. 2, 9 and 30 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Medicare Informational Program

Join the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program volunteer for this informational program for those approaching Medicare, or for those needing to meet Medicare’s open enrollment deadline of Dec. 7 at the Boardman library on Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. They will discuss basic Medicare, supplemental insurance, prescription drug options and more. Take-home handouts will be provided.

I am thankful

List or draw what you are thankful for during the Boardman library’s month long celebration during library hours in November. All artwork will be on display.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Night owl story time

This is an evening story time for children ages 3-5. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in this 30-minute program featuring finger plays, stories and a craft activity at the Boardman library every Tuesday in November at 6:30 p.m.

Clothespin picture frame

Join the Boardman library on Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in creating a piece of art for your pictures. Bring photographs of things you are thankful for this season and share stories while painting and decorating a frame using clothespins. Registration is required. This is for teens in grades 7-12.

TAB meeting

Check out the monthly TAB meeting. They meet the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. This month’s meeting will take place on Nov. 2 at 6:30 p.m. Help plan and support teen activities at the library. Meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are always welcome. This is for teens in grades 7-12.

Check into chess

Join the Boardman library on Nov. 6 at 1:30 p.m. as they play chess this afternoon. This is a family program for all ages. If you would like to learn to play, they’ll be happy to teach you.

BUMC hosts ham loaf sale

The Boardman United Methodist Church, located at 6809 Market Street, will host a ham loaf sale on Nov. 1 from 12:30 p.m. until it is sold out. The loaves will be sold in packages of 6 for $15. There will be no preorders.

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group

If you or anyone you know is interested in joining the free Youngstown Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group on Facebook, do so at https://www.facebook.com/groups/176949576044725/ . The group is made of patients and families with fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue syndrome, and are there to support, inform and help you to deal with these serious illnesses. The group was created by John Porterfield, M.Ed., who is a Certified Holistic Life Coach and Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Wellness Coach.

MCCTC flower shop opens

The student-run flower shop at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open for its fall open house, beginning on Sept. 16 and running throughout the month of October. A variety of fall silk floral arrangements and wreaths will be available. Fall mums are also available for sale and can be dressed for a gift or planted outside. The shop will be decorated and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. during this time. Extended hours are available upon request. Choose from a selection of pre-made items or purchase materials elsewhere and the students can create a beautiful piece for you. Fresh arrangements for any occasion can be made to order with a few days notice. Also they are taking orders for homecoming corsages.

East Class of 1962 to have fall dinner

East High School Class of 1962 classmates will have their fall dinner at 6 p.m. on Oct. 22 at Donavito’s in Struthers.

UFO’s: The truth is out there

Enjoy this presentation on Oct. 29 at 3:30 p.m. at the Boardman library on UFO’s from a historical perspective with emphasis on the best investigated cases. Chris Parsons of the Mutual UFO Network, one of the oldest and largest civilian UFO-investigative organizations in the United States, will explain why many believe that the truth is out there. This event is for teens and adults.

Teen read week bingo

Do you have what it takes to celebrate Teen Read Week by doing fun and unusual reading tasks throughout the month of October? Turn in your completed Bingo sheet and get entered for a drawing of a prize at the Boardman library during library hours in October. This event is for teens entering grades 7-12.

The eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. Local libraries are sponsoring the eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life — some part of it or all of it — told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County. The contest runs from Oct. 1-31.

It’s all about yarn

Bring in your crochet, knitting, plastic canvas or “anything with yarn” project and learn from one another at the Boardman library on Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring all yarn UFOs (unfinished objects). This event is for adults.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit

The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
