A Cleveland man has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for leaving a loaded handgun in a home where a toddler used it to accidentally kill a 1-year-old boy.

Ricardo Sims, 28, was sentenced Wednesday in Cleveland. Sims and 24-year-old Shanee Robinson, the mother of the child who was killed, both pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and endangering children charges last month. Robinson received three years’ probation.

Cuyahoga County prosecutors say Shanee Robinson was watching her son, Braylon Robinson, and two other small children in April 2015 when a 3-year-old boy found one of Sims’ guns and shot Braylon. Prosecutors say police found a second gun belong to Sims beneath a sofa.

Prosecutors say Sims didn’t live at the home.

Sims’ attorney didn’t return telephone calls seeking comment.
