Homicide defendant wants out of prison

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

A man who pleaded guilty to reckless homicide with a firearm specification in 2012 is asking the sentencing judge for early release from prison.

Gregory Carlini, 42, of Bancroft Avenue, who has served just over four years of a six-year prison term, is asking Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to release him.

Carlini’s lawyer, J. Gerald Ingram, filed a motion for judicial release Wednesday, saying his client “has always shown genuine remorse,” “has been successfully rehabilitated” and poses little, if any, risk of re-offending.

Ingram said the death of the 33-year-old woman, who was shot in the mouth Feb. 26, 2012, was accidental and “occurred during a sex game gone awry.”

When Carlini entered his guilty plea, the prosecution recommended the six-year prison term, but said it would take no position on judicial release at that time.

Judge Krichbaum has not ruled on the motion.
