The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland announced its nominees for its Class of 2017 Tuesday


The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland announced its nominees for its Class of 2017 Tuesday morning (see story at right). The winners will be announced Dec. 16. The last group of inductees included five bands and producer/songwriter Bert Berns. The five bands were:

v Cheap Trick: The famed five-neck guitar played by Rick Neilsen, Cheap Trick’s guitarist, is on display at the Rock Hall.

v Chicago: Robert Lamm’s handwritten lyrics to “Saturday in the Park” were part of the induction exhibit.

v Deep Purple: The “Smoke on the Water” band was named “Loudest Band” by the Guinness Book of World Records in 1972.

v N.W.A.: Dr. Dre and Co. liberally sampled from Parliament-Funkadelic in crafting its third and final album.

v Steve Miller: The “Space Cowboy” was taught how to play the guitar by none other than the late Les Paul, who was a family friend.

PResidential debate (9 p.m., multiple channels): Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump clash in their final debate at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Chris Wallace of Fox News is our referee, er, moderator.

Contra dancing at Peter Allen Inn

KINSMAN

The Peter Allen Inn & Event Center, 8581 State St., will present a contra dance Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. A beginner’s lesson will begin at 4:30 p.m.

The cost is $10 per person. Dennis Kempthorne will be the caller, with music by One String Short.

Contra dancing is a style of folk dance in which patterns are performed by duos in two lines as a caller prompts the dancers. For information, go to neohiocontradance.org.

Participants should dress comfortably – soft-soled, low-heeled, preferably dance shoes are recommended. It is not necessary to bring your own partner.

Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available, and The Kinsman Tavern will be open.

Lordi to receive Pioneer Award

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown Community Food Center and Gleaners Food Bank founder Joe Lordi is the winner of the 2016 Pioneer Award for his years of providing food for those in need.

He will be honored at a private program Friday at William Holmes McGuffey Elementary School. The award is part of Founder’s Day, in honor of William Holmes McGuffey, the author of the Eclectic Readers. Both the Pioneer Award and the Founder’s Day program are annual events hosted by the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society.

Educated at St. Dominic’s Elementary School, Lordi is a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and attended Youngstown Business College. He spent a lifetime in grocery management, working in stores owned by his family.

Lordi is the former co-owner of Valu King Markets in Boardman. In 1983, he founded the Youngstown Community Food Center and Gleaners Food Bank, at 94 Pyatt St. Hundreds of thousands of area residents have received food through the years, due to Lordi’s efforts.
