Workshop focuses helping returning veterans

Staff report

AUSTINTOWN

“Binding the Wounds of War” is the theme of a workshop planned from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road.

The program is geared toward clergy, Stephens ministers, counselors, therapists, social workers and caregivers (professional and nonprofessionals) who work with veterans.

Coming home for many veterans is the beginning of a battle for them and their families. The need for community caregivers is great, according to a workshop news release.

Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans face elevated rates of suicide and mental illness, drug and alcohol dependence, car accidents and homelessness. Their families also experience higher rates of divorce, homicide, child abuse and neglect.

The workshop aims to better prepare the community, specifically those who work and live with veterans, to help veterans make healthy transitions into civilian life.

Register by calling the church at 330-799-7823 or emailing your name, address, phone number and email address to redeemerlutheran@zoominternet.net no later than Oct. 28 to ensure a seat.

Cost is $40. Make checks out to Redeemer Lutheran Church and send to the church. Successful completion of the workshop can be used for continuing-education credit. There will be coffee, snacks and lunch.
