The Canfield Village Middle School seventh-grade football team traveled to Boardman and came away with a hard fought 18-0 victory over Boardman Glenwood.

Canfield got on the board first when they recovered a Boardman fumble at the Spartan 43-yard line. Oliver Kovass sprinted 35 yards around left end to give the Cardinals a first and goal at the 5-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Paolo Papalia snuck over from the one behind the block of center Ryan Bennett for a 6-0 lead. The Cards struck again late in the first half when Papalia hit Kovass streaking down the right sideline with a 58-yard scoring strike and a 12-0 halftime advantage.

Canfield relied on their staunch defense in the second half picking off two wayward Spartan aerials. Toby Smith picked of a Glenwood pass and rumbled 40 yards to paydirt to make 18-0. Canfield’s defense front of Jake Grdic, AJ Wise, Landon Beidelshies, Ryan Hively and Anthony Canacci put pressure on the Boardman signal caller throughout the game. Boardman’s hope of avoiding a shutout was thwarted when Jaden Jaffer intercepted the Spartans at the Cardinal 5-yard line to end the game.

Coach Donadee cited the outstanding play of linebackers Drew Carrocce, Smith and Michael Crawford along with defensive backs Ian Hull, Toby Charnesky, Ryan Petro and Kovass for shutting down the Boardman’s offense. Canfield improved to 3-1-1 on the season.

The Canfield Middle School eighth-graders improved to 3-0-1 on the season with 10-6 victory over Boardman Glenwood at Spartan Stadium.

Canfield got on the board first following an Ethan Fletcher 35-yard run to the Spartan 5. Fullback Chris Sammarone bulled his way into the end zone from the 5-yard line for the touchdown. Fletcher hit Ron Angelilli with a 2-point conversion to make it 8-0.

Canfield drove again deep into Glenwood territory but were turned back at the 10. The Cards defense rose to occasion forcing a Spartan safety for a 10-0 lead. Boardman cut Canfield’s lead to 10-6 midway through the third quarter but were shut down the rest of the way by Canfield’s stellar defensive play. The Card’s Andrew Morchak ended all hopes of a Spartan comeback when he picked off a pass near midfield.

Coach Rolla cited the stellar punting of Sammarone as a key factor in the victory.
