On Oct. 23 The Kiwanis Club of Canfield-Jackson Milton will host a Swiss Steak Dinner at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St., Canfield, Ohio 44406. The serving hours are 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Ticket Prices are $12.00 for adults (beverage & dessert included) and Children ages four to nine will be $7.50 and children three & under are free.
Audubon Society holds public seminar
Audubon Society of Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Exciting New Natural History Discoveries” at 7 p.m. on Oct. 25 at the Canfield Library. Jim McCormac of the Ohio Division of Wildlife will speak about newly discovered species and other exciting revelations in the natural world.
MCCTC clambake
Students enrolled in the culinary program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will be having their annual clambake on Oct. 28 at the school’s student run restaurant, The Bistro. This is the first year the event is open to the public. There will be three seatings: 4:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. and the cost is $40 per person. All proceeds made during this event are placed in the student activity account and used to promote education in Culinary Arts.
GA to meet
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
Register for Operation Blessing
Canfield Operation Blessing would like to remind the public that the end-of-the-year holidays are almost here. As usual, in order to receive a large roasting chicken on the group’s distribution days in November and December, you must be a registered client with them. In addition, as of May of 2016, a new rule has been put into place: You must be a registered client of Canfield Operation Blessing to be able to select Christmas presents for your children and to receive a ham at Easter. On Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. will be your last chance to register. You will need the following: 1. A State I.D., 2. Proof of 2016 income for all contributing adults and 3. If you have children, you will need either birth certificates or medical cards for each child.
Knitting guild to have Oct. 22 meeting
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Oct. 22 from 2-5 p.m. at the Canfield library, located at 43 W. Main Street in Canfield. The purpose of this meeting is to join knitted and crocheted sections to form blankets for the Warm Up America campaign. All wishing to help with this project are to bring scissors, darning needles and any washable acrylic yarn they wish to donate. Newcomers of Mahoning Valley to have luncheon
Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will have its monthly luncheon meeting on Oct. 26 at O’Charley’s in Boardman. The social gathering will start at 11:30 a.m. with lunch following at 12 p.m. The speaker will be Victoria Korb from Smart Body, who will be speaking about how different physical therapy techniques can lead to a healthier life. The group is back to an active calendar with Needlework, Roundtowners, Movie Club, Book Club and Birthday Club all scheduled for this month. Trick-or-Treat date change
Canfield City has changed the date of it’s Trick-or-Treat to Oct. 31 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Dairy Queen to host pumpkin hunt
Don’t be tardy for this party. This event, on Oct. 23 at 2 p.m., is similar to an old fashioned Easter Egg Hunt, but children are dressed in Halloween costumes. When you hear, “GO,” children run and search for candy, mini pumpkins and prizes in the hay piles. It’s over early, so come early and eat lunch at the Austintown Dairy Queen. Enjoy a $5 Buck Lunch that includes a sandwich, chips, drink and a sundae for dessert. They have new Philly steak sandwiches, chicken bacon ranch sandwiches and turkey BLTs, too. Pretzel sticks, potato skins and snack melts are all under $2. The event kicks off at 1 p.m. with a costume contest. Children are encouraged to wear their costumes. They will take a photo of your child in their costume and have it printed for you for free. Curly the cone and his friends will also be available for pictures. Decorate your own pumpkin the Dairy Queen way. DQ cupcakes and single servings of DQ cake are available for purchase. Icing, sprinkles and jell will be available for you to color it in. Children can also color a pumpkin to take home or hang in the store. The pumpkin hunt and costume contest caters to children between 2- and 9-years-old. All ages are welcome to enjoy lunch, decorate a pumpkin and get a free photo if you wear your costume.

Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Canfield library on Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. Canfield High School student is 2016 Outstanding Young Philanthropist
A Canfield High School student was selected by the Association of Fundraising Professionals as the 2016 Outstanding Young Philanthropist honoree for Mahoning and Shenango counties. Kate Jenkins, a junior, will be honored at the National Philanthropy Day Event on Nov. 18, during an awards ceremony at Mr. Anthony’s from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Jenkins was nominated by Becky Keck, Executive Director of the SMARTS program, with letters of support written by Craig Olson, Canfield School Board President, high school students and a member of the Youngstown Junior Women’s League. She was nominated for her fundraising efforts that led to the creation of the first ever Art Club at Canfield High School.

CUMC to host caring for those with Dementia and Alzheimer’s event
Canfield United Methodist Church will host a free event for people in the community who are caring for loved ones with Dementia and Alzheimer’s. The event will take place at the church, located at 27 S. Broad Street in Canfield, on Oct. 23 from 2:30-5 p.m. The Keynote speaker will be Elizabeth Young, D.Min., STNA, author of “Sanctuary in the Midst of Alzheimer’s.” Some of the topics that will be explored are the changing roles in dementia care, and caring for the caregiver. There will also be supportive group discussion. Light refreshments will be served and RSVPs are encouraged before Oct. 21 by calling Pastor Beth McGuire on 330-533-9801, ext. 105. During the event there will be the opportunity to take part in a virtual Dementia tour. This “patented” program “simulates the effects of aging and dementia.” To participate in a dementia tour you must pre-register by calling McGuire.
Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group

MCCTC flower shop opens
The student-run flower shop at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open for its fall open house, beginning on Sept. 16 and running throughout the month of October. A variety of fall silk floral arrangements and wreaths will be available. Fall mums are also available for sale and can be dressed for a gift or planted outside. The shop will be decorated and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. during this time. Extended hours are available upon request. Choose from a selection of pre-made items or purchase materials elsewhere and the students can create a beautiful piece for you. Fresh arrangements for any occasion can be made to order with a few days notice. Also they are taking orders for homecoming corsages.

The eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest
Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. Local libraries are sponsoring the eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life—some part of it or all of it—told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. America’s Schoolmaster exhibit
The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
