Salon services offered at MCCTC

The Salon at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road, will open from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Tuesday.

Cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, hair color, manicures, pedicures, facials and hair removal. Services are performed by the students under the supervision of their licensed instructor with prices starting at $5.

Wells Fargo CEO steps down

NEW YORK

Wells Fargo’s embattled CEO John Stumpf is stepping down as the nation’s second-largest bank is roiled by a scandal over its sales practices. The San Francisco bank said Wednesday that Stumpf is retiring effective immediately and also relinquishing his title as chairman. It had earlier announced that Stumpf, the bank’s CEO since 2007, will forfeit $41 million in stock awards.

Wells Fargo’s chief operating officer, Tim Sloan, will succeed Stumpf as CEO and join the company’s board. Sloan has been with Wells Fargo for 29 years.

Pa. court rejects Cosby’s latest appeal

PHILADELPHIA

The Pennsylvania Superior Court on Wednesday rejected Bill Cosby’s latest bid to halt or delay his sex assault case, clearing the path to a trial in Montgomery County.

The one-sentence order shot down the only pending appeal in Cosby’s case. The Superior Court and state Supreme Court have turned down other requests this year by Cosby’s defense lawyers to consider dropping the charges against him.

But Cosby’s lawyers vowed Wednesday to take their latest appeal to the Supreme Court.

Bermuda braces for Hurricane Nicole

HAMILTON, Bermuda

Heavy wind and rain began battering Bermuda late Wednesday as the British territory braced itself for Hurricane Nicole, which became a major Category 4 storm as it tracked toward the tiny island in the northern Atlantic Ocean.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm is expected to pass near or over Bermuda this morning.

The storm could strengthen even more as it approaches Bermuda.

Two police officers in Boston are shot

BERLIN

Two police officers were shot in Boston, and a suspect was on the loose late Wednesday night.

Police said the conditions of the officers were not immediately available.

Police say the officers were responding to a report of a person with a gun when they came under fire.

Police are asking residents of the East Boston neighborhood where the shooting happened to shelter in place as officers search the area for the suspect.
