BOARDMAN

Township trustees accepted donation of an estimated $20,000 from an anonymous benefactor to resurface a part of Brandon Avenue.

Marilyn Kenner, township road superintendent, said she and the township officials have been talking since June with the donor, who prefers to remain unnamed.

“This will be a benefit to the people and the neighborhood,” she said, “It will benefit everybody who lives on that street.”

The cost of resurfacing Brandon Avenue, between Lemoyne to the dead end, is estimated at $18,144. But with the addition of raising two manhole covers, each costing an estimated $600, the total may reach at least $19,344. The township hopes to resurface the rest of the road at a later date but will start with the part the donor paid for soon.

Kenner added the donor may plan to give more in the future.

Trustees also awarded a proclamation to Charles Hoover for his support of the township firefighters beyond the call of duty. Hoover, a former township volunteer firefighter in the 1970s, brought refreshments and snacks to ensure the comfort and safety of firefighters at nearly every fire incident for more than 15 years. This continuous act, fire Chief Mike Pitzer said, goes above and beyond the call of duty.

The firefighters also presented him with his own firefighter helmet, recognizing him as an honorary firefighter.

Hoover said his effort is nothing compared to what firefighters do every day.

In other business, trustees awarded J.S. Bova Excavating the job of repairing the foundation and pavement of the fire station driveway on South Avenue at a cost of $149,764.

Trustees also approved the purchase and installation of cameras, from Buckeye Tech, for the perimeter around the road department building at an estimated cost of $5,113. They also approved the purchase and installation of a fire alarm monitoring panel from Radio-Communications for the road department building at an estimated cost of $5,936.

Trustees also approved the demolition of an abandoned property at 6930 Harrington Ave.
