YSU jazz ensembles in opening concert
YOUNGSTOWN
The season-opening concert of the Youngstown State University Jazz Studies program will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Kilcawley Center’s Chestnut Room. The concert is free and open to the public.
The Jazz Ensembles are directed by YSU faculty Kent Engelhardt and Dave Kana.
The ensemble led by Dave Kana will perform music by Ernie Wilkins and Sammy Nestico. Engelhardt’s ensemble will perform music by Charles Mingus, Frank Foster, Hoagy Carmichael and Marian McPartland.
Rush concert film at Tinseltown

“Rush: Time Stand Still,” a documentary concert film about the rock band Rush, will be screened one time at movie theaters nationwide, including Tinseltown in Boardman, at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3.
The film, narrated by Paul Rudd, provides an intimate look into the band’s final tour. It also includes a 20-minute discussion with Gene Simmons, Chad Smith, Taylor Hawkins, Ann and Nancy Wilson and other rockers, who share their stories about Rush.

‘Campbell’ author to discuss city
YOUNGSTOWN
Joe Pavlansky, author of “Images of America: Campbell,” will discuss the town’s history in a free lecture at the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal S., at noon Oct. 20.
Joseph Pavlansky, was born and raised in Campbell and still calls the city home. A 1998 alumni of Memorial High, he left for the Army soon after graduation and spent three years on active duty and six more in the Ohio Army National Guard. After completing the Peace Officer’s Academy at Youngstown State University in 2003, Pavlansky entered law enforcement and is currently a detective/sergeant at the Campbell Police Department.
The lecture is part of the the Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s Bites and Bits of History Lunch Program series. Guests are invited to bring a lunch to the event.
