Lakeview sweeps Red

BOARDMAN
The Lakeview High School volleyball team set a number of goals prior to the season. One that was hardly ever talked about was to win the All-American Conference Red Division with an unblemished mark.
Mission accomplished, thanks to Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over Boardman that spoiled the Spartans’ Senior Night.
Anne Pavlansky had 28 assists, 10 kills and six blocks to lead the Bulldogs (20-2, 15-0). Miranda Pesa added 20 digs and Alex Romano had 15 points, including five aces.
Lakeview won for the 11th consecutive time.
“It’s really a great accomplishment to go undefeated and win the league title,” Pavlansky said. “The Red Division is really tough this year.
Pavlansky said the Bulldogs struggled in the third game and overcame some adversity in the fourth game to regain momentum.
The Bulldogs raced to a 19-8 lead in the opening set, then scored six of the final eight points en-route to a 25-11 victory.
Alex Romano’s seven points and five more from Jensen Silbaugh then helped Lakeview to a 25-23 victory for a 2-0 advantage.
“We haven’t gone undefeated in league play in a while,” Silbaugh said, adding, “we wanted to send our seniors out with a [win].”
“We kind of lost our momentum in the third game, but got it back in the fourth set,” Silbaugh said.
In the third set, four points by Boardman’s Ashley Clark staked the Spartans to the early 6-2 advantage. And when Charlotte Voytko added seven points of her own, the Spartans turned a narrow 12-11 lead into a 19-11 margin.
With Clark scoring the final three points, Boardman (12-9, 6-7) won 25-16 to cut the Lakeview margin to 2-1.
Of Lakeview’s 20 victories this season, Boardman’s win in the third game marked the sixth time that Lakeview did not shut their opponent.
“In that third game, the key was aggressive serving and that’s how we were able to get the momentum,” Spartans head coach Danielle Siembida said. “All season long, we’ve had a hard time playing catch-up.
“Tonight, we just had too many hitting errors and more serving errors than I care for us to have.”
Romano helped Lakeview to the early 5-0 lead in the fourth set. Four points by Boardman’s Kaylin Burkey cut the Bulldogs lead to 13-8.
With Lakeview holding a 15-9 advantage, Pavlansky ran the table for a 25-9 win.
“We play a tough schedule so it’s really a great feeling to go undefeated in league play,” first-year Bulldogs coach Heather Guthrie said.
Guthrie, whose Bulldogs also defeated the Spartans, 3-0 on Sept. 15, called Boardman is a gritty team that never quits.
Silbaugh also added 12 kills for the Bulldogs.
For the Spartans, Burkey had 14 kills, Haley Blangero made 22 digs and seven kills, Clark made 26 assists and Jessica Mowery made 23 digs.
