Man arrested after South Side chase
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
Police used seven cruisers Saturday afternoon to look for a man who drove away from a traffic stop on the South Side and then ran away on foot.
Earl Lewis, 33, of Roslyn Avenue, was taken into custody about 5:25 p.m. Saturday behind a vacant apartment building at 127 W. Florida Ave. on a warrant from Trumbull County and an additional charge of fleeing and eluding.
Reports said an officer tried to pull over a car Lewis was driving at Southern Boulevard and East Philadelphia Avenue because a records check revealed he had a warrant. But Lewis refused to stop, instead driving across Market Street to the 100 block of West Boston Avenue.
There, the car stopped and Lewis jumped out and began running away with officers running after him. A woman was in the passenger seat of the car but when police went back later, she was gone, reports said.
Reports said Lewis ran through several yards and through a group of people in one yard and extra cruisers were called in to keep him from leaving the area.
Lewis was caught after neighbors told police he was inside the vacant apartment building. Reports said when officers kicked in the back door, Lewis tried to run out but fell off the porch and flat on his face.
Lewis also faces several traffic charges. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital to be treated for injuries he suffered falling off the porch, but reports said Trumbull County authorities were expected to pick him up from the jail when his treatment was finished.
