YOUNGSTOWN

“To Vote or Not to Vote: That is the Question” is the theme of a discussion planned at 2 p.m. Saturday at Reed’s Chapel Church, 1939 Jacobs Road.

The event will emphasize the importance of the issues of economics, health, justice and education and what the African-American community is entitled toget regardless of who is elected president.

Betty J. Dopson of Girard is organizing the event. Scheduled participants are the Revs. Christopher McKee, Kenneth Simon and Lewis Macklin; Tracey Winbush, vice chairwoman of the Mahoning County Republican Party; and Clarence Boles of the Buckeye Review, who will address various perspectives.

Vehicle strikes man

A man was taken to the hospital Sunday afternoon after being struck on South State Line Road in Brookfield by a vehicle which fled the scene, according to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner. Police are investigating the incident which occurred at about 1:15 p.m.

Girard leaf pick-up

The city will again require the use of paper lawn bags for the annual leaf collection. Leaves raked to the street will not be picked up.

A bulk quantity of bags will be available to city residents while supplies lasts. Bags can be picked up Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon beginning Oct. 17 through Nov. 12 at the Girard Street Department Garage, 943 S. State St.

The first five bags are provided at no cost upon proof of residency (a photo I.D. and a utility bill). If additional bags are needed, they can be purchased at a cost of five bags for $1. Call 330-545-1322 for information.
