TENNIS

Division I

CANTON

Three Canfield tennis players have advanced to this week’s district tournament. The doubles team of Hannah Cianciola and Sydney Cianciola will enter the district tournament as the top seed after winning the sectional tournament. The Canfield team defeated Massillon Jackson’s Megan Reese and Lindsay Reese (5-7, 6-4, 6-3) in the semifinals. In the final, Canfield defeated North Canton Hoover’s Alessa Koinoglou and Hallie Hunt (6-1, 6-3). In singles play, Canfield’s Emily Hofsess lost to Louisville’s Kayla Pukys (6-2, 6-4). Hofsess will be the fourth seed after losing the third-place match to Perry’s Kasey Pukys (5-7, 6-3, 6-3). The district tournament begins Thursday at 9 a.m. Springside Racquet Club in Fairlawn. The finals will be contested on Saturday.

Division III

BOARDMAN

The top seeds in both singles and doubles claimed sectional titles to qualify for next week’s district tournament in Akron. In singles, Warren JFK’s Kaytlin Marlott won the title, beating Salem’s Ashton Morris, 6-4, 6-3. Urusline’s Lexi Tsudis defeated JFK’s Laura Gavin, 6-3, 6-0, to take third place. In doubles play, Poland’s Marisa Ricciardi and Audrey Schweers took first place by defeating Lakeview’s Lauren Paczak and Anna Garvin, 6-4, 6-4. The Cardinal Mooney duo of Hannah Matthews and Isabella Francisco took third, beating Warren JFK’s Caitlyn Condoleon and Paras Kontos, 6-2, 7-5. .

GIRLS SOCCER

Howland 1, Aurora 1

AURORA

Na’Pier Ramsey scored for the Tigers (8-6-1) with an assist from Amarah Howard. Goalkeeper Kamryn Buckley made one save. For Aurora (7-3-3), Courtney Wendel scored with an assist from Sami Richard and Michaela Haley made six saves.

Cardinal Mooney 4, Laurel 0

STRUTHERS

Breanna Evans scored two goals and had an assist for Mooney (12-3). Liz Philibin had a goal and an assist and Carolyn Kay notched a goal for the Cardinals, which was assisted by Carol Buchenic, Mooney conceded one shot on goal.

Canfield 2, Hickory (Pa.) 2

CANFIELD

Canfield saw it’s season-long win streak snapped. Anita Mancini and Cecilia Shaer each scored a goal for the Cardinals (13-0-1), Mancini also collected an assist and so did Elizabeth Pilolli. Lauren Slanker made five saves for Canfield. Lauren Bell and Natalie Bell each earned a goal for the Hornets.

VOLLEYBALL

Canfield 17-25-25-25, Chardon 25-19-13-15

CHARDON

The Cardinals (17-3) spotted the Hilltoppers the opening set, then won the next three behind Maddy Johns (15 points, 12 kills), Jessica Meissner (10 digs) and Morgan Cleevely (10 digs). Jenny Smith added 13 assists, Natalie Maras had four blocks and Lara Quirk had four aces. Chardon was led by Genna Gabanic (12 kills, 12 digs) and Molly Clark (19 assists). JV: Canfield, 2-0.

Cardinal Mooney 14-25-25, Columbiana 25-11-23

COLUMBIANA

Dee Dixon put up 10 kills, five digs and a block and Alexis Cross had four kills, six digs, seven points and an ace for the Clippers. Morgan Highley had three kills and three digs and Emily Gosselin had 14 assists and an ace. Autumn DeSantis had 21 kills for Mooney and Taylor Martin added 12. Haylie Sapp had 29 digs and Maria Pelini made 24 assists.

Springfield 25-26, Mooney 19-24

COLUMBIANA

Brianna Yemma had 10 digs and six points and Mariah Johnson had eight digs and three points for Springfield. Makenzy Capoullezz had 14 digs, four kills, and five points, Sara Chaszeyka had five kills and Lindsey Smith had three kills. Autumn DeSantis had eight kills and 19 digs for Mooney. Bella Stanko added 14 digs. Springfield 20-25-25, Columbiana 25-23-19

COLUMBIANA

Mariah Johnson had 22 kills and five points and Kaelen Yemma had 28 assists and eight points for Springfield. Ellie Centofanti added 30 digs. Dee Dixon had 10 kills, 10 points and an ace for Columbiana. Emily Gosselin put up 21 assists and seven points.

Hawken 25-25-25, Newbury 13-12-21

NEWBURY

The Black Knights fell to the Hawks in straight sets despite eight digs, six kills, five assists and three blocks by Caleigh Hamby. Haley Hamilton added 12 digs, Hailee Cigany had eight digs and Abigail Grubbs had five digs. Desiree Sullivan added five kills for Newbury (2-16) and Julia Elia had four.

BOYS SOCCER

Austintown Fitch 3, Boardman 1

BOARDMAN

The Falcons scored all their goals in the first half, courtesy of Blake Baker, Cameron Ashley and Jarett Knight. Hunter Klaus and Mitch Desiato had assists for Fitch. The Spartans got on the board with 20 minutes to go when Sean Buck scored an assisted goal. Fitch goalie Trevor Hykes had eight saves and Boardman’s Jeffrey Holmes also had eight. The Falcons and Spartans will play again Tuesday. JV: Boardman, 1-0.

Canfield 5, Warren Harding 2

WARREN

Tanner English scored twice and added an assist for Canfield (9-5-1). Justin Montazeri and RJ Thomas each scored a goal and two assists and Alec Simone chipped in a goal. Dominic Van Winkle and Avery Stovall had a goal apiece for Harding.

Maplewood 3, Badger 1

MECCA

Tommy Rink collected his 100th career goal while scoring two for the Rockets (13-1-1). Tyler Black notched a goal for Maplewood and Matthew Palm collected an assist. Andrew Welch scored for Badger (6-8). Griffin Boyd made five saves for Maplewood.

Newbury 6, Bloomfield 2

NORTH BLOOMFIELD

Johnson scored twice and Surckla, Fink, Wilson and Lubanovich added goals as the Black Knights (11-2, 10-1 Northeastern Athletic Conference) won. Surckla and Fink also had assists. Martin and Parke had goals for the Cardinals. Piczer and Borski combined for three saves for Newbury.

FOOTBALL

Late Friday Poland 34, East 0

POLAND

Jonah Spencer rushed for 66 yards and two touchdowns for Poland (4-3). Reid Gould and Dante Romano each added a rushing touchdown. Kicker Colt McFadden made two field goals, including a 55-yarder. Thomas Steele was the most productive offensive player for East (1-6), passing for 55 yards.

VIENNA

Daniel Canter scored the winning points on a 20-yard run.
