Karen Biery launches fifth novel ‘of Home’

Karen Biery will release her fifth novel, “of Home,” on Oct. 20.

The novel is centered around Fairmount Children’s Home in Alliance, which was home to thousands of children for nearly a century. It offered security, shelter, food, learning, health care, nurturing and compassion along with cruelty, hatred and death. Henry and Belle Gates were two of the children living in the home under the rule of Headmaster Rumsted. The story is not dissimilar to many of that era, yet their actions may have been.

Biery will be available for book signings from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at Look Nook, inside Salem Regional Medical Center, 1995 E. State St.; from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 22 at Frank’s Family Restaurant, 428 E. State St., Alliance; and Oct. 27 at Diletto Winery, 9182 Youngstown-Salem Road, Canfield.

Valley native writes science fiction novel

AUSTINTOWN

Eric John Kumik, son of Jack and Sallie Kumik, was born and raised in Austintown. He graduated from Austintown Fitch in 1997 and attended Bowling Green State University studying scientific and technical communications. He became a flight attendant for Allegiant Air and is currently living in Las Vegas.

The launch of the “Dark Horizon” series began while Kumik was doing an internship at Walt Disney World where he was exposed to the imagineering department. He took notes and wrote character designs for a new style of science fiction. His novels are meant for all audiences.

“Dark Horizon — Horizon’s Genesis” is set sometime in the future. A science team is dispatched to an unknown planet and upon arrival the team finds a mysterious relic. After finding the relic, the team finds there is no room for error, no calling for help and no backing down.

The novel is available in both soft cover and eBook forms and can be ordered from Amazon, Apple, Google Play, Barnes and Noble and from iUniverse.com or visit Dark Horizon website at www.darkhorizonseries.com and on Facebook at Eric J. Kumik.
