YSU volleyball team falls to Green Bay

YOUNGSTOWN

Eleven aces and 12 blocks weren’t enough for the Youngstown State volleyball team on Friday evening as the Penguins dropped a four-setter to Horizon League-leading Green Bay at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 25-18, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19.

Lori Vanbeek finished with a match-high 13 kills, and Lauren Blanco registered 19 of YSU’s 52 digs. Sarah Varcolla tied for match-high honors with seven blocks, and Aleah Hughes posted three aces.

YSU had seven more kills and seven more aces than Green Bay, but the Penguins also committed 13 more serving errors, 13 more attack errors and three more blocking errors.

Green Bay scored the first three points of the match and never trailed in the first set, and six Penguins serving errors in the set helped the Phoenix keep the lead.

YSU will host Milwaukee at 4 p.m. today.

Mill Creek announces seasonal closings

YOUNGSTOWN

Parts of Mill Creek MetroParks’ James. L Wick Jr. Recreation Area will close for the season starting Monday.

The park’s Par 3 Golf Course will close until spring beginning Monday.

Other amenities, including the volleyball and tennis courts, will close over the next few weeks.

One of the three tennis courts will remain open all winter, as will the Juliana Kurinka Children’s Play Area and ball fields.

Panthers’ Newton fined for taunting Falcons LB

NEW YORK

Cam Newton was fined $9,115 for taunting Falcons linebacker Deion Jones , who avoided a fine for his helmet-to-helmet hit on the Carolina quarterback on a 2-point conversion later that knocked Newton from the game with a concussion.

Panthers right guard Trai Turner was fined $24,309 for verbally abusing an official who didn’t flag Jones for the hit that the NFL also deemed legal.

Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was fined $24,309 for taunting in a loss at Minnesota on Monday night.

Redskins cornerback Josh Norman was fined $9,115 for pantomiming a bow and arrow after an interception against the Browns, and Cleveland receiver Terrell Pryor was fined the same amount for using the football as a prop.

Patriots place QB Jacoby Brissett on IR

FOXBOROUGH, Mass.

The New England Patriots have placed quarterback Jacoby Brissett on injured reserve with a right thumb injury.

A third-round pick in this year’s draft out of North Carolina State, Brissett was pressed into duty with Tom Brady suspended when usual backup Jimmy Garoppolo was injured in Week 2. Brissett helped the Patriots finish off their victory over Miami, then started in a 27-0 victory over Houston before presiding over the team’s 16-0 loss to Buffalo this week.

In all, Brissett completed 34 of 55 passes for 400 yards and ran 16 times for 83 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown.

Brady’s suspension ended on Monday. Garoppolo is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game in Cleveland with a shoulder injury.

Ole Miss QB involved in brawl at prep game

BUFFALO, N.Y.

Mississippi quarterback Chad Kelly, the nephew of Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, was involved in a brawl at his brother’s high school football game in New York.

It happened during a game between his brother’s team, St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, and Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School on Friday night. Buffalo police suspended the game. There have been no reports of arrests.

The scuffle began after Chad’s brother, Casey Kelly, reportedly took a late hit. Chad ran onto the field, and video shows him being restrained on the field by several coaches.
